You say you wish Hassan went for the 1500 fresh, but she got 2 gold medals and one bronze
You never know unless you put yourself out there and Hassan did, she came home with 2 golds and a bronze medal which is way more hardware than 1 1500m gold
I know I am sticking my head in the mouth of a lion by going against what appears the favorite events on letsrun, 5000m & 10000m. Have you read any of my previous posts on this site? I do not respect 5000m & 10000m as events at major meets, specifically Olympics & W.C. I do not believe there really is any such thing as 5000m & 10000m runners.
Five-thousand metres is for either over-the-hill 1500m runners who want to do one or two less track workouts per week or 5000m is for 1500m gals & guys who do not trust their ability to get through heats hitting 1200m mark of 1500m at a moderate pace then kicking 300m and/or 1500m gals & guys who do not trust their kick in big meets.
Ten-thousand metres is for sub-prime Marathoners. Too often, 10000m gals & guys who prevail, especially currently are the same 1500m gals & guys without necessary finishing speed for 1500m races, especially since there are no more heats in 10000m at Olympics & W.C. If there were heats for 10000m, the 1500m gals & guys would more than likely have dead legs for 10000m final.
As I stated on other thread: Original track events were 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, Marathon & 110mH. IMO, 5000m & 10000m were added to satisfy complaining not so elite 1500m guys 125 years ago and to satisfy not so elite Marathoners who were complaining 125 years ago. I do not believe there is a type of runner most suited for 5000m or 10000m. I look at Miruts Yifter who if reports are accurate raced a 48.xx 400m TT at 1972 Olympics. I know he chose 5000m over training for 1500m because he believed the competition was weaker at 5000m.
IMO, 5000m & 10000m are unnecessary filler events. Participants are not middle distance runners and 5K-10K gals & guys are not really long distance runners. I do not mind them as events being occasionally raced, like 600m or 1000m, but I do not believe 5000m & 10000m should be Olympic events and I do not respect those who earn 5000m & 10000m medals at Olympics. Btw., was Said Aouita racing 5000m at 1984 Olympics any more than a Steve Cram/Seb Coe dodge? See 1984 Olympics 1500m.
Please note: My comments are not directed toward current or former collegiate 5000m &/or 10000m gals & guys. Collegiate 5K &/or 10K runners have no choice to chose Marathon over participating in 5000m &/or 10000m. [I know runners in theory could chose racing for a shoe company as a very young Marathoner as opposed to attending college.] My comments apply specifically to 5K & 10K as Olympic & W.C. events.
