I started running 30 years ago! It has added so much joy to my life as well as all the magnificent health benefits. What happened is I stopped smoking and starting running. I have run 5 miles a day 5 days a week since. I am in great aerobic shape! The doctors all tell me that, too. Blood pressure perfect. I look way younger than I am, like a puma! People I went to school with who did not stop smoking are in bad health and have been for many years. They can't even climb a set of stair without breathing hard. Some can barely make it! They can not enjoy their lives like a healthy, aerobically fit person. Please note I was never a "jock" or into competitive sports at all in school. I am not a health nut. I just simply discovered the "secret" joy of running. I wish I could share it with the world. Through this forum maybe many people though.
One aspect of running that has aided me is the definite relaxation I feel after my run. It helps so much to break up the day and get me centered. I find solutions to things more easily. I'm less stressed. I sleep so well on my running days.
I recommend going to a running store and trying on various shoes from different manufacturers. Each has their own signature. The right shoe brings immense joy.
I ran one race in my life. Total waste of time. I run exclusively on my own for all the joyous benefits. Marathons are not recommended. Why put yourself at risk of injury with such a long distance.? All you need is a few miles a day to feel great. I did not feel great before I started running. I think the government should pay people to run 5 miles a day. These costs would be far, far less than what they spend in health care costs. Now that I think about it I may get involved with something like this to make it happen.
