Prior record holder, Elizabeth Yeltzer (17 seconds slower than Covert now ran) finished 14th at FL that year(2005) running 17:56, #4 on the list Maria Hauger (22 seconds slower than Covert now ran) finished at NXN that year (2012) running 20:01 to give you a sample.

She has run every race with s smile on her face. She is holding back waiting to win the JV NXN race and the real nationals at Footlocker.
Big CU fan here happy to have Covert on board next year.....but I don't think it will be close with Tuohy. Covert has mile and 2 mile pr's of 4:55 and 10:05, while Tuohy is at 4:33 and 9:47 (and there is that 15:37 5k on the track). In cross Tuohy has been beating runners who could well fight for 2nd at NXN by 40 seconds to a minute!
Of course - that's why they run the race. If Tuohys fitness really has slipped a little, and Covert et al are still around with 400 to go who knows.... but I'd put my money down that this is already over by the 1 mile marker. Looking forward to the races!

Last year we were robbed of a great LANE vs TUOHY battle. I think Lane would have beaten tuohy just to stir that pot again haha.
Would like nike and footlocker come to an agreement and do their races every other year so that the best can go head to head every year....
Katelyn Tuohy ran 5000m in 15:37.12 January 22, 2018 at the age of 15. That is the world best for a female 15 years of age and younger. That makes Katelyn Tuohy the World Record holder for 5000m for females 15 years and younger. The previous record was 15:55. To give some perspective in the December 2017 Boston University Indoor 5000m only Karissa Schweizer and Ednah Kurgat ran faster than 15:37 in a field of top NCAA female runners. I believe if Katelyn had been invited to run the 2018 NCAA Division One Cross-country Championships she would have won. If you want to compare Katelyn Tuohy to Emily Covert watch the video of the New Balance Outdoor Nationals where Katelyn ran the mile in 4:33.87 to break the 36 year old record to become the American High School female mile record holder and Emily Covert staggered and collapsed over the finish line in 4:56.

Katelyn Tuohy is not a once in a generation runner she is a once in the history of the world runner. She is the most exciting runner in the world and hopefully will remain so for years to come.
I will say that there is a possibility that she loses. Aside from the fact that it's cross country and that upsets can happen more often in cross country compared to track. The two only two ways she could lose is if she is out of shape or she runs a bad race strategy. Obviously she is not out of shape. She broke multiple high school record last year and seems to have carried that fitness over to cross country, as throughout the season she has broken multiple course record, including her own. So her fitness is not in question, in fact I would argue she is in better shape than Covert. The only other way she could lose this is if she just botches the race plan. Correct me if I'm wrong but she hasn't really had a race where she was challenged this season. This will obviously be the first time that she has actually had to RACE in a long time, probably over a year if you look at track. Racing in a pack, or with someone clinging onto her, introduces a new type of stress that she probably hasn't been exposed to in a quite a long time. How she handles this stress will determine the race result. If she freaks out and goes out to hard and dies in the last 800/1000, Covert will reel her in, she is fit enough to do that. If she is smart, relaxed, confident, and under control then she can either sit with the pack and leave them in the dust the last mile of the race or just go out from the gun and take the win that way. The point being anything can happen, but its going to come down to stress management for both of those girls. For the sake of entertainment I hope she sticks with the pack for a while.

Tuohy is best at track but Covert has mastered XC.
as far as the New Balance1 mile run goes Covert did run the 2 mile (2nd as noted above) the day before I believe, whereas Tuohy was fresh and pointing at the 1 mile record. But as far as mastering cross country goes, Tuohy has beaten everyone she has raced in XC the last several years by 40 seconds or so - even a number of runners who ran right around 10 flat for 2 miles on the track (Chmiel, Hart, Culbreath). Running 16:45 a year ago in the slop that was that course was pretty darn good.
