You have a low bar for measuring success. Babyface Nelson, Prettyboy Floyd, John Dillinger and Machine Gun Kelly (real m.g.k.) had movies made of them also. You seem as if you want someone to pat you on the back and tell you attaboy for your college drinking.
Well, for you, his accident defined him, but for most people it didn't. And your gangster analogy is idiotic.
I love it when letsrun posters, while sitting alone in their apartment feel the need to type for most people.
I'm not sure that anyone has ever come up with proof that a couple of pints every now and then detracts at all from a runner's performance. Obviously going out and getting hammered is a very different matter but I've known several international runners and they all enjoyed a beer occasionally.

How often do collegiate runners party and drink. By the looks of it I’d imagine they do at least moderately during the season. How much do top nationally ranked teams party?
Yeah, wow.. I guess that would be fun. Someone should introduce alcohol to college students. Could be a real hit.

The bad runners drink a lot, the good runners never drink, and the top guys drink a lot.
Basically like the rest of life, you've got the try hards with no talent trying to make up for it while everyone else enjoys themselves.

All that drinking by Pre wrote:
In life, Pre was a loser. Pre embarrassed himself, his family, University of Oregon and USA dying as a drunk fool. Did all that drinking help Pre from 4900m to 5000m of 1972 Olympic 5000m final?
He was a loser? There were movies made about his accomplisments. The trail near campus is named after him. The biggest track meet in the US is named after him. He held ARs from 2000 to 10000.
It was a tragic accident and he was the only victim. If hadn't been speeding, James Dean wouldn't have died, but I haven't heard of him being called a loser.
That's because the residents of Eugene are beta cucks.
Even Hitler had movies made about him and still has followers. So, your point is valid. Frank Shorter was friends with Pre but he made a great life for himself. I bet the top 3 male and female finishers from the NCAA meet don't do much partying.
Good point about bad dudes wrote:

So you're comparing Pre to Hitler? Does Hitler have a prestigious track meet named after him? Is Pre responsible for the death of 50M people? And although a friendship with Pre has ruined many lives, Shorter was able to overcome it?

They weren't exactly named after him, but the 1936 Olympics were fairly prestigious.

At the end of the day, you're an athlete and you need to take care of your body. Nobody bats an eye lash at a runner having a few beers, notice I didn't say binge drinking, yet mention a runner smoked a J on the weekend, his whole career is down the drain.
Moderation ya'll. Get your rest, dial in your diet, and live like an athlete, because you're not just a college student.

Didn't you sign some silly honor code that you wouldn't drink, smoke or heaven forbid, use caffeine? The Mormons are weird to forbid college kids to at least use caffeine (how do those student-athletes stay awake with their busy schedules?).

Paul?
Just so you know- Pre would chug a beer before every race.
Just don't get blacked on the reg and you'll be fine. Don't believe the bs that if you drink you won't improve. Plenty of national caliber athletes go nuts every once in a while.
Yeah, I went out with some mid-20s US pros after a pro meet last summer and a lot were getting after it.
Saw two of the guys, one an Olympian, go home with some butterface 6.5’s.
Now some don’t drink at all, like Centrowitz.
I went to a D1 school in the northeast (I was not a competitive runner at the time, but I was an athlete on a different team known for partying.) The runners were very focused in season. The few who even came to parties drank little to no alcohol and went home early to go to bed. Like, home by 9-10pm completely sober whereas the parties would go on until 1,2, 3, 4 am etc depending on the evening. They practiced early in the morning. After the season ended, some of them would loosen up and drink here and there and stay out later, although still nothing out of control. But they were in season most of the year, so that wasn't often.
I'd like to think that after winning national titles, Colorado and NAU are out there living it up a little.
If you read Centro Sr's book, he says he typically drank so much that Dellinger had to enforce a "three beers a night" rule: one before dinner, one with dinner, and one after dinner. Ah, the glory days.
Centro Jr said he never drank in college until the end of his senior year, I think after nationals, he went to a party and that was his first and only party at Oregon.
