The difference is Rupp, after college, began taking gray area drugs and when combined with intravenous injection over a period of time he had a stellar run at competing internationally with outright drug cheats. Rupp ran 27:33 in 2007 at age 21y 3m. At the time, it made him the #7 American all time.

That's the track event in which he went on to medal at the Olympics and set an American record. And it foretold his marathon ability, where he would also medal.

Fisher doesn't have anything like that on his resume at the same age. Of course, there's hope for improvement but there is much less of a signal that he is going to be world elite in any event.

As a related point, Fisher has a somewhat funky, bouncy stride, whereas Rupp always had classic form. Are there runners with funky strides who make it work at the super elite level? Yes, but it's not a great bet in the case of any one individual.

It's a merciless sport.

I thought this thread was stupid until I read that he's no better than Rupp at this point -- a perennial runner-up to Solinsky in college and Farah in the pros -- who has still never managed to win a gold medal at any distance.

As it turns out, Fisher took a good deal longer before he broke through. Even in 2019, his 5000m pr was just 13:29. He had some injury problems in his first training camp with Bowerman and took a long time before adapting, as he said. It was not until 2020 that he ran 13:11/7:39.99/3:36. Then in 2021, he got even better with an 8:11 2M/13:02/27:11 and 5th at the Olympic 10k, as well as 8th in the 5000m. Still, this is on another level. 12:53 indoors with a sub-4 close that came close to his mile pr.

Really what this says is that his low-mileage coach at Stanford, who isn't there anymore, didn't know what the hell he was doing.

That would be the same coach who aided, by not drilling into the ground; Elise Cranny, Shaun McGorty, and Grant Fisher. Just maybe Milt recognized their talent, was able to still get NCAA championships out of them without being greedy like so many other NCAA coaches chasing bonuses and using talented athletes to the max to gain future recruits instead of thinking longevity.
