A bit surprised Lagat finished.
Really, because of his 62min halfs this year I thought Lagat is capable of a 2:11-2:12, but obviously he has not enough marathon miles in the legs or, even more likely, the marathon is simply not his distance. I can't imagine that he will be a member of the Team USA in Tokyo. No.

3) Shalane 2:26.22 - NYC best
4) Molly 2:26.44 - Marathon PB
6) Desi 2:27.51 - didn't fully crater, fwiw
7) Allie 2:28.12 - BIG Marathon PB
Why do you call Keiffer's 1:27 PB "BIG" but not Huddle's 1:29 PB, which is bigger?

From 20 to the finish Lelisa Desisa ran: 4:53; 4:48; 4:44; 4:30; 4:45; 4:48; 4:41, and :56 (4:18 pace) for the last .2
From 20 to the finish, Shura Kitata ran: 4:53; 4:47; 4:41; 4:32; 4:53; 4:39; 4:31, and 1:00 (4:35 pace) for the last .2
Just looking at this, it looks like Kitata just plain ran out of gas. He looked stronger coming up Central Park South, but, he still had a half mile to go and may have hit the blasters a little too early. Watching him on the ESPN broadcast coming through mile 25, it looked like he was running really well and gaining on Kam and Desisa - and it was a bit of a shame that no one on TV picked up on that. Then, Desisa surged with about 1200m to go and Kam fell off. They made the right hand turn on to Central Park South and suddenly, Kitata was really giving a solid chase and almost instantly was shoulder to shoulder with Kam. And Desisa looked nervous....
Such an unbelievable finish and solid effort by Desisa to hold off Kitata. And a sub 2:06 on that course, which is also just incredible. Even the female podium finishers all stopped what they were doing to watch the end.

Love to see Ward get owned.
What? Top American, and a much better showing than his last couple attempts. I wouldn't call that 'owned'.

In this history of this race dozens and dozens and dozens have hit halfway under 1:04 (including me). Marathons feel like a walk in the park, until it doesn't --- then it becomes extremely difficult.
Wait until they get to Spanish Harlem and then the Willis Avenue Bridge. That's where the race really begins.
The NYC Marathon begins at White Castle.
I bet that smells great late in a marathon.

+1. It’s like having Joe Biden at the finish line.
+2 But with bleached blonde hair.

Sellers did what she set out to do, get an "A" standard.
Nice PR along the way.

great freaking run by Shalance and Molly!
Molly pr'd! 2:26 in New York!
Don't understand why doesn't she stick to the 10k and half. She's clearly not built for the marathon as opposed to Shalane.
How is Shalane built for the marathon? She runs it well enough, but how is she built for it?
Desi is built for the marathon; Steph Bruce is built for the marathon.....but how is Shalane?

Biwott 2:12.52
Derrick 2:13.08
Ritchie 2:15.22
Vail 2:15.31
This is the best we got on the day, a fast day, perfect day for the marathon and we cant break 2:12.
For comparison to a Berlin course, I am deducting 2:30 from the men and 3:00 for the women. That is being conservative. Ritchie was under 2:12 at CIM and not that close to breaking 2:15 at NYCM
The only thing clarified on the American men's side of the state of 'thon running is the water is murkier than ever.
Besides Galen, who will likely be fine after injury, there is no one close to competing against the East Africans.
How will our handful of 2:12 to 2:15 Americans find the extra 4 to 8 minutes to be competitive?

Hey guy! Thanks for showing up and adding your input, we ALL really appreciate it.
I chose to highlight Allie's PB because it was suprising and a continued upward trajectory that is impressive.
Molly is simply running what she should be running, if not below potential, as she figures out 26 miles of racing.
So what else do you hate? What else makes you angry? What else can we highlight in your life to make US feel better?
The race director is doing that stuff just because Mary Wittenberg always did it, but in reality, it only works for the women race directors. Get this right, though: Peter Ciaccia is a straight forward guy. He is no nonsense and will give you a direct explanation for any policy he is instituting.

Keiffer has improved over a shorter time period, and from an easier course to a harder one.
Based on this, she has much more upside than Huddle.

In VF 4% Mary would have run that 67min 2nd half more efficiently and looking relaxed.
Why is anybody still interested in US marathons when they make every excuse to be slow? Redesign the course to be competitive how about.
They're gonna make out like bandits as long as Kipchoge is so dominant though. The next best might as well run slow for money because fast ain't fast enough.
I assume the above is talking about Shalane Flanagan? She did get lucky last year...haven’t heard any of her typical excuses for not winning yet, Maybe she saves those for Boston,
