How would you respond to someone who says to you: “Running marathons isn’t even good for you.”
I think they read the 2012 study from that bozo

I would rather be a 50 year old running marathons, than a 50 year old who isnt able to run
I would tell them that they are correct and that they should never run one. Then laugh when they die of coronary artery disease before their 50th birthday.
Are they serious, like worrying about your health, or just being judgmental b*tches??? In the second case, I’d find out what they like and what hobbies they have and ‘return’ the favor.... LOL... Or tell them to stop sticking their noses into your s**t they don’t understand.... Hahaha
I would tell them they are correct.
I think we all agree running 5 miles a few times a week (say 15-20 mpw) is healthy. Running 40 mpw has some marginal additional overall health benefit. So does running 60. After that, the overall health benefits are not marginal. They are negative. You’ll be a better run, sure. But not more likely to be overall healthy.
Same with running 26.2 miles. Not good for you by any objective measure.
By the way, I run a marathon every year. I’m 50. I’ve run 25 marathons. But the heavy training and actual races are not good for you. Your friend is correct.
They arent wrong.
But like alcohol, junk food, smoke, marathons pick your poison.
It always did humor me though when people say you shouldn't run its bad for your knees but the inactive ones are the ones always needing a knee replacement.
Training for a marathon is healthy, racing one sure isn't.
I would probably shrug and laugh, neither is drinking this beer. This would start a chain of events that leads to a threesome with the wife and the friend.

At a certain level, I agree. What's so good about it? What are your comparators? Does it lord supremely over other distances with regards to ensuring good health?
I would respond with this(just replace smoking with marathons):
I’d say “yep .” What I’d like to say is “Typical American thought process lacking any shades of grey . Running 26 miles as hard as you can isn’t great but it doesn’t justify doing zero exercise and being 50 pounds overweight , blimp.” Then I’d spit on her shoes .
Tell her to lick deez....
Even though they're just plain wrong, I'd probably just say, "you think I like to run because it's good for me?"
There’s a deeper issue here. Your wife must not be happy with you running so much and neglecting her so she tells her friends all about how you love running more than her. This was a subconscious way of her best friend telling you to fix you’re marriage before it ends.

Tell her: "Running marathons is a lot like taking Viagra. Maybe it's safe, maybe it's not, but it sure is a lot of fun"
I would say that if it is not that is more my concern than theirs.

Agree with her since it is true.
Then ask her if she had anything else in mind for you to do with your free time...wink wink.
Marathon running is all about genetics. Don't kid yourself people, follow the science:

This is correct. Continued high miles and intensity is bad over a long period . You will have the face of a 60 year old when you are 35.
I’d treat them just like Alec Baldwin treated that guy who stole his parking spot.
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.

Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
