Who are you to say pronghorns aren't antelopes. You've actually missed the premise of the thread yourself in that this pronghorn is whatever the hell it wants to be. Or rather whatever the hell it wanted to be, because it's now changed its mind and is actually a man. You can't use biology to identify things - it's 2018 and pronghorn antelopes are now a "thing" - if they want to be.

Why should any one person get to decide what something is? Just because you're that thing doesn't mean you're the only one with a stake in that decision. Other people have to look at you and interact with you. No pronghorn is an island unto itself.

There is no real definition until everyone agrees. At worst there should be a vote and, with no clear majority, there is no identity. A pronghorn would lose this vote.

See there you go again. Limiting the pronghorn's capacity for self-determination and gluing its identity to the dead syntax of bygone generations. You even said that the pronghorn cannot choose to become an island, which could be seen as quite upsetting and callous if a pronghorn were minded to transition in that direction.

John Donne didn't say No Pronghorn is an island unto itself, he said no Pronghorn is an island ENTIRE unto itself. Meaning that the pronghorn can be an island but that it's actions affect and perhaps diminish the greater continent of pronghorns (or islands) to which it belongs and that it too is also diminished in turn. Also, I don't think john Donne was saying that that the larger community had to reach a consensus before the pronghorn would be allowed to call itself an island, just that it had to be mindful that everything pronghorn was interrelated and that they shouldn't ask about tolling bells.

I do understand your point however, I am just not sure John Donne did.
