My point is this: some people aren't happy unless they are p!ssed off (my aforementioned grandmother, for instance.) In other words, the standard of "if it makes other people feel sh!tty" is not only unrealistic, it is undesirable. If that were truly the standard we strove for, we'd all be mute.
Hate to open up a whole other can of worms here, but I feel like this is a pretty consistent style of argument made across a wide variety of issues, generally from the right: SOME people are going to X, so therefore the issue isn't worth even thinking about critically. I do appreciate that you at least gave a concrete example (your grandmother) other than (solely) the usual hypothetical "somebody."
SOME people are always going to be offended about something...so why even bother worrying about offending anyone?
SOME people are going to get their hands on guns regardless of the laws...so why try to strengthen control?
SOME people are going to abuse the system...so why consider XYZ welfare program?
SOME countries are going to continue to increase fossil fuel consumption...so why bother reducing ours?
SOME immigrants will commit crimes...so why should we let in any?
I'm not sure if it is simple, uninspired thinking or just a smokescreen to use as an excuse not to change toward a direction that makes you uncomfortable. I think it is probably usually a bit of each. Regardless, I think it is pretty selfish. Just an observation.
