Yes he is the best of all time.

It's got to be Camille.
Tore up the track, too. Not fun doing 1000K+ in 6 days on a track.

Right--how could it be anyone else?

Yiannis Kouros documentary:

Kouros on the roads & trails (Spartathlon has a difficult trail section).
No, Spartathlon does not have a difficult trail section. There is a trail up and down the Sangas Pass but it's not difficult at all.

No way. Camille can't run a couple miles along a trail without getting a concussion.
Perhaps you were doing it lots slower, like everyone else...
Spartathlon course has undergone several changes as well since 1983, didn’t you know?
For those who don’t know the story, Kouros’ time was considered impossible, partly because of this trail section, they thought he must have cheated.
Forydce.

What changes?
They were all minor. Sangas pass is part of every Spartathlon.
The people there said it was tough, including the athletes who designed the course. You weren’t there, you didn’t design the course, and you & everyone else who’s ever done it can’t match any of Kouros’ times in his 4 wins.
Hmmm.
Marshall Ulrich, because he doesn't rely on a team but only himself.

Can someone crunch the numbers?
Who has the most long lasting WR?
Who was the most wins in competition?
Who has the longest winning career?
Who has the most competitive miles in the bank?
Blend those together and you'll have a GOAT candidate.
Anywho, my personal pick is Yannis since he goes the furthest and fastest at that distance.
Since Bekele hasn't moved up to ultras I guess Dean Karnazes.

I actually ran with the guy who designed the course and I have run with Kouros.
With no doubt he is the greatest ultrarunner in the world nobody comes close to his achievements.
But the Spartathlon course is not difficult on it's own. The Spartathlon is so difficult because of it's very tight cut off times.
You have to be a very good ultrarunner just to finish it.
Can someone crunch the numbers?
Who has the most long lasting WR?
Yiannis Kouros had the WR for 24 hour races since he started doing them in the 80ies.
His 303k on track from 1997 will probably stand another 25 years.
His 48 hour WR will probably stand another 50 years
His 1000 mile record of 10 days and 10 hours will stand for another 25 years
Who was the most wins in competition?
Karl Meltzer has the most 100 mile wins. Great guy and runner but not in contention for being the best ultrarunner
Who has the longest winning career?
Yiannis Kouros
Who has the most competitive miles in the bank?
Since he ran a lot of long races it's probably Kouros again
Blend those together and you'll have a GOAT candidate.

Yep, it has to be Kouros.

Discus.
I am torn on this one. The obvious first thought is Jurek. The sport has evolved so much even since 2010-2012 time frame though. Honestly, until this wave of runners that's come the last few years peaks and the next wave comes in, the sport is in a transition phase of sponsors, FKT's, and just a new vibe in general. Kinda hard to define a GOAT in ultra running, thus far.
Def have to acknowledge runners like Ann Trason, Jurek, Hal Koerner, Karl Meltzer, Tim Tweitmyer, Karnazes (yes, he belongs), Killian, and others that I can't pick off the top of my head yet (coffee is still kicking in).
The real question is..how many of the younger flashy ultra runners will be doing this a decade from now? What I love about an OG like Hal for example, he's past "prime" and a family man now, yet still competes in races like Lake Sonoma, North Face, and others, just for the love of sport. IDK how many of the new school will be in that boat come the 2030s.
