Would like to know more about this guy. Previous best seems to be a 59:09 from Copenhagen a month ago. Got thing in 2017 Amsterdam Marathon, won Daegu this year, seems to have run a 27:44 road 10k in Kenya.
Not gonna lie, the improvement seems shady, nothing indicates this guy was capable of the half marathon world record.
Kiptum's tilastapaja.org profile is fascinating. He's 29 but doesn't show up until 2015 when he ran a 2:11:36 marathon for third in Rabat.
IN 2016, he focused on the half, running 61:52 at Madrid and then 59:36 for 6th in Copenhagen. He also picked up an xc win in Kenya in October.
In 2017, it was a tale of two halves with the first part being mediocre and the 2nd spectacular. He started the year with a couple of xc wins in Kenya. Then he picked up a 2:15:23 marathon win in Lagos - that was in February. In April, he ran a 29:18 10k at altitude (5th place) before finishing 7th in 2:14:38 at the Dongying Marathon in China.
The 2nd half of the year was spectacular, however. He ran a 60:06 pb in the half in September in Portugal (Porto, winning) before running a 2:05:26 in Amsterdam (3rd).
This year, as he was geting ready for the Daegu marathon he ran a 63:48 half in Granlers Spain (7h place) before winning Daegu in 2:06:29 on April 1st. Since then, he'd run a 63:02 half (win in Juy), a 59:09 runnerup showing in Copenhagen on September 16th before most recently finsihing second on October 13h in an xc race in Ndalata in 31:24. In that race two weeks ago, he got smoked by 32 seconds. But the guy who smoked him was Rhonex Kipruto - the 2018 world junior champ who has been on fire this year and run 26:46 on the road this year.
If I was Rhonex Kipruto's agent, I'd get him in a half right now.
How riveting!! First 3 guys all dressed in the same kit, same haircuts, look the same, etc. No wonder this sport is in decline. You could put the top 10 in a bag, shake them up and pick one out. Nobody from letsrun.com would be able to pick any of them out.
Oh yeah, did I mention all of the top 10 come from doped up countries?
If verified, the race sets a new record for most sub 59:30 performances in a race with 8. Previous record was 6.
Can you imagine running 59:29 and finishing 8th in a race?
8 Abel Kipchumba (KEN) 59:29
He’s 1/1024 white.

Any chance the course was short?
I'd like to compare everyone's splits. Did everyone rip the 2nd half?

That's why he didn't run sub 58

Stay pressed, sir. I live for it.
Other half records have been set in vLencia if memory serves. It's flat and weather was near perfect today.

, running his first 10k in 28:02 with the pack before taking off and running his 2nd in 27:16 .
That's a fast final 10k
Wow!
It is always good to watch a great race.
I was wondering what Kiptum was up to after Amsterdam marathon. Last year, he took Lawrence Cherono all the way to the finish.

The athlete is pretty legit (or as legit as he was a month ago). Check the course. I've heard from several sources, in race production and outside, that the folks who set this up and certify it have been known to favor fast times for their clients...just speculation and rumor at this point, but hopefully someone independent takes a look at the course.

Yes, there is a chance.
Anyone know what shoes he was wearing for this new record?

Agree 100%. Something is rotten here. A second 10k in 27:16? 2:15 marathon to 2:05? Note that his coach/handler is in Spain and that of dibaba/souileman/mikhou. As you know, Mikhou is under drug suspension.
My goodness, why is this $hit not exposed?

Unless I am mistaken, he was wearing the Vaporfly in the video.
all these records we see lately related only to vaporfly's
Not saying it's all about the shoes, which obviously isn't the case, but it's kinda anticlimactic to know the shoes in which the record was broken.
