Very good HBO documentary calling out all these rich a-holes that go to "climb" Mount Everest and pretend they are actually climbers when it is the Sherpas that carry all the massive amounts of gear up and down the mountain countless times for each unqualified a-hole.

Bit harsh to call them a holes but get your point. -
I'll have to watch this before commenting. I will say this though, you still have to get yourself up and then back down on your own power. That's one thing the Sherpas and the porters don't do for you.

You can just tie a rope around a Sherpa and get them to tow you uphill. I'm pretty sure some hobby alpinists do that in one form or another. -

I'm not sure that's even true anymore. There's been several 70+ yr old people who have been essentially carried up the mountain. -
I don’t have to watch the documentary. I watched the Simpson episode when Homer climbed the mountain with two Sherpas.

Are you actually a former Rainier guide? Is it true that if there was someone who you didn't want to continue climbing that you would take their boots away?
Say hi to Ed for me! -
Excellent documentary. People who make their sherpas carry dining tables and the like should be freaking embarrassed.

sherpas should stop biting the hand that feeds...
nepal isn't exactly the economic jewel of the universe -
It’s their job. We all have jobs.

Sure but who actually does the work..? -
In reality, climbing Everest has gotten a whole lot easier for all involved ever since a jointly funded Nepalese/Tibetan expedition installed a high-altitude pulley system prior to the 2012 climbing season. Since then, climbers descending the North Face into Tibet help hoist climbers and their gear up the South Col route from Nepal and vice-versa. Sherpas now mainly function as high-altitude lift operators.

Everest is now the mountaineering equivalent of the St. George marathon, except you now have the option to strap on roller skates if the last six miles get tough.
-
Some do go up and down on their own, but there is a lot of "short roping " that goes on too....just sayin'

What? You pay the Sherpas to carry your s#it. That’s their business. That’s their job. -
Standing at the highest land point on the Earth is a pretty arbitrary goal anyhow. Big deal. What's wrong with 7300 meters? Why should higher be better?

More vanity projects for the rich people.

Only real way to claim to climb Mont Everest.

What do you care and what does it matter? Everything is arbitrary if you take that attitude. People do what they want. -

I don’t understand blanket hostility towards those who have been successful in life. Only losers think like this. You should re think your value system.
