The Japanese do not love distance running. They love marathon and ekiden. Period. They could care less about track events.

There's one thing common to all this runners, and that is their weight. All of them are in the range of 50 kg weight.
But they have "big " powerful legs to push their "light" body to that speed. Is the same with east africans runners but of course
genetics makes them look different ( longer and lighter legs in east africans) and also their BMI is a little different.
East africans have a lower BMI, and thats is a an advantage.
About running style . To me they are perfect!!! They are perfect with the body they have!!! They cannot have the running
style of Kenyans simply cos their body is a lot different and so the entire kinetic chain is totally different and this gives
as a result a different running style.
For the same reason if I watch run elite white(europe or usa) runners the first thing comes to my mind is that they are rigid , that they dont have the relaxed run of East Africans.
But Japanese runners to me they run with a great style. Relaxed and fast!!!

If you look at Japanese runners at Ekiden races a majority runs with huge flaws in their technique. They have no flexibility in their legs. They hold their arms very low below pelvis, heel strike etc.
For example in this half marathon race there were more than 200 runners in sub 66 min
https://youtu.be/QMmAfSJ45FQHow is this possible with that bad technique?
You omitted something else;
The Japs have very long torsos in proportion to their legs. They also run in very short quick strides (or very quick short strides).

arm carriage is out to lunch,
you cannot do middle distance that way, nor 10k at the top.
however, you can get away with 28 min 10 k speed for 1/2 marathon, no problem....
al sal could get away with a sub optimal style, due to his talent and training.
at the end he devolved into a shuffle ... and maxed out at the 208 .. with his posture getting worse and worse...
