Right? So why didn’t she go to one of those? Because she didn’t receive a single scholarship offer. Get this, Stanford told her not to even visit. Why? Because all these schools know she’s done, she knows she’s done, so she figured might as well get a great education, go to the place she liked the most & receive relatively little pressure to ever run at a high level again. If she does, great! If not, no worries. Pretty simple actually. And yes, I know this.
You're one of the stupidest people on LRC.
That dont narrow the field much.
Seems like a hedge bet by Lane . Her running career peeters out she can always say she focused on academics . If she went to Oregon or Colorado and blew up she would just be considered a failure

You’d be surprised who I am.
Probably Ghost of Igloi.
I don't care how good the runner is in high school, it's about the degree and the college name on your resume. She's making the right choice. Most high school phenoms should be this smart.
Most top female distance recruits have peaked in high school. My recommendation: use your running top get into the best school possible. The odds are you won't improve much and may not stay healthy consistently so take care of your top life priority: your EDUCATION.
Let's talk about some recent H.S. female phenoms and where they are in school and how their college performances have gone...
Crickets....
She's the most intelligent talent in awhile. I had thought Judy P was clueless until she came to her senses and went back to Harvard. Congrats to her as well.
And to everyone who thinks she's not getting athletic aid, you're wrong. All top athletes at ivies get academic or other grants. It may not be a full but an ivy league education and degree is worth so much more and if you can get one for state school process, you take it.
You are caught in your own web. You are calling all LR posters idiots so you are calling the LR posters who went to the ivies or had kids go to the ivies, idiots. So why would it be smart to have Claudia go to Dartmouth if her father is an idiot poster on LR?
You are absolutely incorrect regarding aid at the Ivies. They have only one reduction in price and it isn't based on athletics, academics, or race. It is solely based on income and assets. Katelyn Tuohy would pay the same $70k at Dartmouth regardless if she breaks every HS record this year. You are also off base in your assertion that an Ivy education is a good investment. Read the US News article posted in other threads. Graduates of Dartmouth earn the same amount as their equivalent peers graduating from Oregon, Washington, Alabama, or the Ivies. So Lane would have been way smarter to use her talent to earn a scholarship somewhere because she didn't get one from Dartmouth. It I another thing if she was poor and got a significant reduction there but she didn't.
All LR posters are idiots (except for the 2% that are not). I have three good family friends who all are in the 240K-320K total family income bracket. Their intelligent, athletic children are all at Ivies and are NOT paying full retail price. If you've filled out the FAFSA/CSS lately you'll recall it's based on a combination of current assets and liabilities, including college costs of other siblings. This determines what the school considers ;income' when defining "needs based." Take a look at how much aid is given at Princeton, and note, the total family income numbers: Dartmouth is very similiar. Princeton's details:
https://admission.princeton.edu/cost-aid/how-princetons-aid-program-works
She's getting aid, it's just not called 'athletic aid'. I wonder how the endowed scholarships are awarded???
"Some Dartmouth students will be selected as recipients of one or more of our over 750 endowed scholarship funds...."
Look at the article from earlier:
Quote, "It's not free, but it's also not the full price of $50,000 or more.."
To your last point - an Ivy League education at half prices is a GREAT investment. At full price, not nearly as much but if I can sent my kid to Dartmoth for $150K total vs almost every State school for the same price, I take the Ivy.
The LR 'idiots' also demonize the value of a D3 education. It's DISTANCE RUNNING - There's no money after school and no one outside of those reading this post even cares.
It’s not at all unusual for kids to get large academic scholarships at Ivy League institutions that go far in offsetting the costs. You’re a fool to pay full price without investigating all of your options.
No there are no academic scholarships.
From the Ivy League Website. The sentence about no scholarships is in bold on their website because they are tired of ignorant people calling them after reading propaganda on LR.
FINANCIAL AID CRITERIA
Ivy League schools provide financial aid to students, including athletes, only on the basis of financial need as determined by each institution’s Financial Aid Office. There are no academic or athletic scholarships in the Ivy League. A coach may assist a prospective student-athlete to obtain an estimated financial aid award, however only the Financial Aid Office has the authority to determine financial aid awards and to notify students officially of their actual or estimated awards.
Remember: A prospective student-athlete who receives an estimated need-based financial aid award is welcome to share it with other Ivy League schools. In some cases Ivy League financial aid offices may reevaluate and adjust an estimated financial aid award based on a written need-based award or estimate from another school. Ivy League coaches may not discourage a prospect from sharing an award, or from obtaining an estimated award from another Ivy institution

Strange decision. Her family obviously has some money which makes the cost $70k at Dartmouth.
Strange post. You didn't complete the only meaningful sentence it includes. Not an Ivy Leaguer yourself?
Your last sentence is incomplete. You possibly meant to ask, “Are you not an Ivy Leaguer yourself?” Are you referring to the first sentence? He should have said, This is a strange decision.” The other sentence is fine and clear.
All of this concern about her family’s decision to spend $70k. I wish that her father would confirm the price to the rest of the ignorant posters.

When is going somewhere to get a quality education 'hedging your bets.' Weird way to paint it
I'm a loyal alumnus of Dartmouth and love the place to death, but unless I had some kind of massive net worth so $250k didn't matter to me...I would tell my elite athlete daughter to go to Stanford or Cal or Michigan or someplace where she could get a half off or free top-level education.
Dartmouth might be among the best undergrad experiences in the nation, but volunteering up that kind of money instead of a great ed at a sports scholarship institution is a bit crazy.
Unless money doesn't matter to the Lanes.
those shorts she's wearing tho --
honest question, what are those? and why would she be wearing them?

Maybe she is just not interested or able to train at the high level required to run at a place like Stanford. It's a big commitment for 4 years and a lot of pressure that distracts from academics.
So many top prep girls don't make it through 4 years of college injury free. I have no idea why she choose Dartmouth but at least she will get a great education.

Those shorts are very normal, common, and fashionable amongst girls on the West coast who have some cash. They’re all over the SoCal beach scene.
Methinks this is Papa Lane . ???
If she went to a big school she would become the next Sarah Baxter:[
