The NBA G League will start offering $125K to top high school graduates as an alternative to college.
That's what the NCAA gets for not paying players.

This will help college basketball. Most fans hated the one and done's.
I don't know what the NBA is thinking, the last thing an 18 year old needs is a six figure bank account.
Are you kidding me? Every 18 year old needs a six figure bank account. Good on the NBA.

After paying their agent his percentage, supporting a group of hang arounds from the hood, buying a. Lambo, paying alimony and child support, then paying taxes, he'll still be better off than a college freshman.

I assume the WNBA will do this as well.
This makes a lot of sense for the guys who have no desire to get a degree. It’s better for them to see what it really takes to make it in the NBA. The NCAA had it coming not paying these guys.

I love college basketball and I think this is great. Guys who want to play for a college team will likely do it for more than a year and guys who want no part of being in college have an option now. But don't bet your house that a lot of guys in that second group won't still do a year of college ball. Playing for Kentucky will seem a lot more glamorous than playing for the Maine Red Claws will.
One and Done's we're bad for the NCAA wrote:

Right, soon college basketball will be as popular as college baseball.
How will this affect college funding for XC and track?
this will have no negative impact on the NCAA
The best kids wanting to play college ball will still go to Kentucky, Duke etc. The same teams will still be the best teams. No need to pay college players.
The kids who don't want to play in college are the ones complaining about not getting paid. They don't care about the education, or the cost of tutoring or the cost of feeding them or the cost of athletic training room. They just think they should get paid because they are something special.
I guarantee Duke will still sell out all of their games, just as Alabama football will even if they offered no scholarships at all.
College athletics will be fine without the one and dones. Quite honestly it is an ageist policy for the NBA and NFL to require these guys to go to college in the first place. The college game will have plenty of fans regardless of whether or not these athletes are there or skip straight to the pros, and there will be plenty of people willing to take their place. When people go to a college game, the name on the back is not as important as the name on the front. The NCAA doesn't need to pay players, but the pro leagues do need to eliminate their ageist policies.
How is it decided who is good enough to play in this league? It's not based on a draft out of high school like baseball is.
Not only do they get a salary but they would be free to pursue and accept endorsement deals and get agents which is not allowed in the NCAA
It looks like the league will identify potential players and distribute them to teams initially.
It will evolve over time.
I read that they could only be in the league for one year. So a bunch of 18 year olds.
Don’t know what happens to those that do not go onto the NBA afterwards.
I like the concept.
And I would like to see college either truly amateur or openly professional.
I love the NBA, and I hate college hoops, so take this all with a grain of salt.
1. These kids make more than that now in payments under the tablel. Why would they take a pay cut?
2. Teams in the G League are affiliated with NBA teams. How’s that going to work when a guy on the Windy City Bulls gets drafted by the Nuggets?
3. You think G League guys making 35k/year are going to like these kids earning 125k?
4. The college game is garbage and doesn’t prepare kids for the NBA. Sorry, but it’s true. No one wants to watch a bunch of scrappy four-year white dudes miss open jumpers. You know I’m right.
5. Get rid of the stupid one-and-done rule. Let teams draft these kids and stash them in Europe or the G League if they need time to develop.
6. Again, the college game sucks. Coach K is trash. March Madness is the worst three weeks of the year.

My guess is that you will continue to see the same minuscule levels of funding and at bigger programs that bring in a ton of basketball revenue, it will probably mean reductions to other sports due to lost revenue.
Over 700 kids playing on the teams that make the ncaa tourney. Probably not over 10 or 15 a year go to G league. Lebron's era of going straight to the nba certainly didn't hurt college basketball.

You're a boob.
They'll be no lost revenue
In one year they can make enough to pay for College if their basketball career doesn't work out.
Eh. 125k that they have to pay taxes on is about the same as the top 10 guys get paid under the table to play a year in college. Plus they are surrounded by prime 18-21 year old trim begging to give it up in college. I don’t see this moving the needle much.
