Sorry to disappoint you then, but I had no basic speed and in the late 70s early 80s I was one of many runners doing big mileage, and in my case, 110- 120 mph. I was a strength runner. Also my Marathon PR pace was closer to 83 seconds per 400m. Not sure what I can say.
2:24:12 is around 82.5 per 440.
I also have a hard time believing you could not run 69.5 for a single 440.
I knew many 2:24 marathoners. All of them could run at least 4:30 for a mile. Yes, some were more like 4:30 and some were more like 4:15. So some where grinders and some not.
I did know someone who was around a 2:39 marathoner who could only run 4:52, but even he could run 69.5 (for more than one lap).
