..........he has WORLD CLASS speed, just because the guy ran track.
Tonight we heard about that WORLD CLASS speed of Marquise Goodwin. They kept talking about how he was an Olympian, giving the impression he had Olympic caliber jets. The guy was a long jumper, yes, they have good speed but rarely WORLD CLASS (yes I know)
Goodwin ran a 10.24 windy, that is hardly WORLD CLASS, that is a good NCAA sprinter.
Do wish these guys knew track if they plan on talking about it. It was the same with RGIII.
So tired of hearing........

10.24 would be the national record in more than half the countries in the world. I consider that world class speed, especially when applied to a sport other than track.

Just because some countries lack world class athletes doesn't make a 10.24 a world class time. And the NFL has had a TON of guys with sub 10.20 jets.
What pro sprinter has a PR no faster than a 10.24? Give me the name of a world class sprinter who can't break 10.24, good luck. -
umm....ever heard of Flo-Jo?
-
Yeah, they toss that phrase around like its nothing. 10.24 isn't even sub elite, because b sprinters run about 10.05-10.10, and then after 10.15, you have your C list sprinters.
The only football player to have true world class speed was Bob Hayes, and he is the only football player to win a super bowl and an olympic gold in 100m. Technically, he is the first sprinter to go sub 10. -

Tommy Smith, John Carlos & James Hines. Johnny "Lam" Jones has a gold medal on 1976 4x100m relay. If one has a 4x100 relay gold, one can say, "I am a world class sprinter." Ron Brown has a gold medal on 1984 4x100m relay. Five off the top of my head. I am sure there are more. -

With ya on everything until....The only football player to have true world class speed was Bob Hayes. That simply isn't true.
Sam Graddy Broncos...84 Olympic 100m silver medal....10.09
Ron Brown Rams...84 Olympic 100m finalist....10.06 (Hayes PR, yes a 10.06 ran on dirt some 20 years earlier is superior)
Johnny Jones Jets took 4th in that 72 Olympic 100m final
All these NFLers were Olympic sprinters.
Trenton Jackson Eagles
Henry Carr.............64 Olympic 200m gold/9.3 yards
Gerald Tinker Falcons 9.3
Larry Burton Purdue 9.3
Frank Budd Eagles WR9.2
Ray Norton Niners WR9.3
Michael Bates Seahawks 10.10
James Jett Raiders 10.16
Willie Gault Bears 10.10
All these guys ran sub 9.4/10.20
Willie McGee Chargers WR9.1
J.D.Hill Bills 9.3
John Roderick 9.3
Cliff Branch Raiders 9.2
Mel Gray Cards 9.2
Isacc Curtis Bengals 9.3
Cecil Tuner Bears 9.3
Curtis Dickey Colts 10.10
Darrel Green Redskins 10.08
Alvis Whitted Raiders 10.07
James Trapp Raiders 10.16
Jamaal Charles 10.18
Michael Bennett 10.18
Tyreek Hill 10.19
Trindon Holliday Broncos 10.00
Jacoby Ford Raiders 10.01
All these guys ran a sub9.4/10.20 just not NFLers
John Capel
Leonard Scott
Jeff Demps
Xavier Carter
Sultan McCullough
When Hayes was a running back at FAMU the other RB was Bob Paremore a 9.4 guy, a 9,4 was World Class back then.
Those at 9.4 in the old yards days.
O,J.Simpson Bills
Charlie Frazier Oilers
Butch Woolfolk Giants
Mark Duper Dolphins
Joe Delaney NWLa
Homer Jones Texas Southern
As you can see TONS of NFLers with world class speed. But....a 10.24..isn't that. -

Smith, Hines and Carlos did....0.....in football. They were failed experiments.
Jones had a decent NFL career with the Jets, -
Let me add TCU/NFLer Cyrus Leland who ran a WR 9,5 way way back in the 30's

I worked with Willie Neal the uncle of NFL stud fullback Lorenzo Neal. Willie like Lorenzo was out of Lemoore HS. Willie ran track with Tommie in HS, they were great friends.
He has told me this.....
That isn't Tommie, that is his wife, she is one of those trouble makers. Tommie just going with what she wants.
In his book "Blackthink" Jesse Owens says the exact same thing.
I grew up in Visalia that's about 40 miles east of Lemoore, This is central Cali not Montgomery Alabama, I never saw anything here that had me thinking.....why this mistreatment of blacks? They were treated just like everybody else.
John Carlos was from Harlem and a big mouth.
Ernie Smith a 13.8/9.4 sprinter at Oregon State, yep, Tommie's younger brother seem to make it just fine. -

We have the adults lives of Tommie Smith and John Carlos. We have evidence of the lives they have lived. I believe both to be serious men. You may choose to dismiss them based on unverified alleged quotes from others.
Are you certain Jesse Owens did not have ghost writers? I am sure he had editors. -

Dude, cool this stupid....alleged...ok?
Willie is like his brother who is a preacher in Lemoore, deep deep into religion, he does go around BSing.....got it?
Dude, Carlos himself talked about having some doubts Tommie would go thru with it.
To have Jesse Owens say what Willie said (they didn't know each other) yep......sold.
California was nothing like the south. -

Doubts. I do not think less of Tommie Smith if he weighed the pros and cons of his future actions before his actions. There is a trail of written evidence Martin Luther King Jr. had doubts. It is interesting that you have all these secret sources. Peter Norman was there. He didn't represent Tommie Smith as a follower or a coward. You mentioned California versus the south. Tommie Smith, John Carlos along with their mentor Dr Harry Edwards were not advocating for California while excluding the south. That was a puzzling statement by you. It is only right that I refer to your secret sources as alleged sources. -

Read the book......Blackthink.......bingo~~~~
Working with a guy who knew Tommie is a secret source......hahhaha! I have been to the house Tommie grew up in in Lemoore, I sold insurance. Saw Lorenzo Neal play HS football and Ernie Smith run many times and Larance Jones, been to Lemoore many times, trust me this is not Mississippi.
Yes, the wife of Tommie Smith was very much into equal rights and the black movement, this is a fact. Yes I believe Wliile Neal and Jesse Owens. And knowing what I do about the street thug John Carlos, it's real easy to see Tommie caught him in the middle of something he wish he wasn't. -
Let me make this clear, Tommie Smith was a star athlete around here in the mid 60's, a celebrity. He was well known. I do doubt he had it rough in Lemoore (huge naval base there, a lot of blacks in town).
I do believe his wife pushed him into looking at things like she did, and while being a bit hesitant and reluctant he did start seeing things like she did. He did get caught up in the movement. But without her influense and the radical John Carlos fueling the fire, there is no salute. -
Dump post to start the thread, but pretty funny how derailed it got.
-
Also tired of announcers saying a sub 10 100m isn't world class
-
So you want NFL Football color and play by play guys who are speaking to the general public to differentiate between 10.24 and 9.85 100 speed?
Al Michaels: Goodwin just showed off some of his World Class speed there on that sweep to the right Cris!
Cris Collinsworth: Well Al he did turn on the jets there but that speed as far as I can tell might only win him the Big 12 Title...
