Is there any connection between kindney disease and being a long time runner? Just got test results back how can this be?

Used to think systolic in double digits and resting HR below 40 was cool till my kidneys started hurting and I'd feel loopy for weeks on end. Turns out it was SLE and it had impacted my renal function by the time anyone figured out what it was.

When I feel s...tty overall, my eGFR goes down to about 50, esp. if I don't ease up on running and lifting. Overall s...ttiness of being is caused by increased inflammation and continuing the same training at those times makes my kidneys work harder with poorer results. My suggestion - talk to your doc about trying easing up on your mpw before you get retested. If your GFR improves with rest, your running could be exacerbating an underlying problem.

My own experience. I had greatly improved my diet, was running many more miles, and improving my times. After a very nice 16 miler over steep hills, I had bright red blood in my urine. This freaked me out as it hadn't happened before, so I mistakenly went to have it checked at a medical place. They did a blood test, and sent me to a urologist, who discussed the results with me and wanted me to have something called a IVP, an intravenous pyelogram.

We had a long discussion where he kept trying to convince me, and I kept asking more questions, because none of what he was saying made any sense to me. I don't recall exactly how it went down as it's been a long time, but somehow I found out what the test comprised of, the dangers of doing it, told them all that I wasn't going to do it and I left.

My personal feeling was that the blood was just a sign of my body cleansing and adapting to what I was doing, and I firmly still feel that my feeling at that time was correct. Regardless of what would have happened, I was much more comfortable to keep doing what I was doing, then to have some spurious artificial and dangerous test done to me, that could seriously mess me up, also considering what else they'd want to keep doing to me after that! NO! Thank goodness I had the good sense to leave and to not do any of that.

I don't recall the exact date but that was approximately 50 years ago.

I am in my 70's now, am perfectly healthy and fine.

I haven't been to any doctors since, and have never had any issues with my kidneys.

In my mid-20s, I discovered -- in the course of a bone scan for diagnosing a metatarsal stress fracture -- that I had just one functioning kidney. (The other was, like yours, tiny and barely visible -- probably a congenital defect.) I'm not sure whether, or to what extent, the existence of a solitary kidney affected anything, but I did experience a sharp rise in serum creatinine levels (from under 1.2 to over 1.6) during my early- to mid-fifties, which was certainly disconcerting to me (even more than the discovery of bladder cancer during an ultrasound examination of my kidney). Fortunately, my serum creatinine levels have come down during the last couple of years; the only factor I've identified in this reversal is increased hydration -- something that I never took seriously when I was younger. (My sodium intake has generally been very low throughout my adult life, so that never struck me as as a likely factor, but your observation is interesting.)

Actually, depending on his kidney function, drinking too much water might be dangerous. Stage 3 typically doesn't require fluid restriction, but in some cases it might. As kidney function decreases, so does urine production. If you drink more than you purge, your blood pressure can increase, your lungs can fill with fluid, and you may suffer congestive heart failure.
