You also forgot London. Not sure there are any other European cities that are even close to the size and diversity of NYC. The average murder rate in Europe is 3/100,000 vs NYC at 3.4/100,000. Not sure I'd call that out of control. New York has a lower murder rate per capita than most American cities. Less than Seattle, San Fran, Chicago, LA. This idea that NYC is dangerous is a holdover from the 70s-80s. The murder rate in NY hasn't been this low since the 1950s. These day you'd have to go to the edges of the city (east ny and the south bronx) to really feel like you're unsafe. Even then, if you're not bothering other people, they won't bother you. But please hold on to your misinformation. We hate tourists.[/quote]
I was mugged once in 1980 on 30th and 5th avenue. Havent been mugged since but I avoid east NY, Brownsville, Far Rockaway, Queensbridge and most of the Bronx.
Statistically, NY is very safe but muggings happen everyday. I found European cities more unsafe with its beggars, pickpockets and kids grabbing at you.
