I'm thinking of doing my marathon training by averaging 70 miles/week by only running every second day for 20 miles at a time. I'll likely use a 3 run cycle as follow: Easy 20 miles slow, 20 miles fartlek, 20 miles up tempo, repeat.
How successful could this be? I love the idea of having the free time to spend with family and focus on work.
I had limited time to train weekly and was able to run 2:38, 1:13 HM, and 16:05 5k with something like this for 4 months:
M - off
T - 10-12 miles, 6 x mile w/ short rest OR track intervals
W - off
Th - 10 miles, 4-6 mile tempo
F- off
Sa - 5-6 easy on hilly trails
Su - 14-18 miles with fast finish
The marathon really hurt at the end because I never ran over 18-19 miles. It's probably just based on natural talent though, because my PB's are a lot faster when i was able to train 6-8 times a week.
