I know exactly what they mean. She was audacious to say her goal is win the gold medal in the Olympic marathon. She has literally no chance of ever doing that.

I don"t know if this applies to GJ but it seems people think she is an attention whore?

Many LR posters are old guys with lots of time to complain about things. This blatant monetization of running success and profit motive cult of personality, or sex symbol or female power thing, or whatever these things people are doing as distance runners wasn't something we grew up with. It's embarrassing in a way. But sure, people need to make money.

Seems like younger men are probably just jealous.

Runners are furious when 'non-runners' are actually runners, and have better results than these runners themselves. It's impossible, you see, to swim, and/or ride a bike, and/or lift a lot of weights, then somehow run very fast times. No! Running fast requires tons of miles, or not enough miles, or miles around a groomed field at Nike HQ, or miles in high dewpoints, wind, rain, and heat/cold. These aren't runners, only I can say who is a runner, and today's runners aren't runners!

It's well known in running circles that triathletes are rubbish at their individual sports so for a half-runner to announce they will win Olympic gold is arrogant to the point of being funny. What Gwen is basically saying is that triathletes are SUPERIOR to runners even though they only do it a third of the time. If she had real talent she wouldn't do the triathlon.

I would react the same if Brownlee said he was going to the win the Olympic marathon.

It's called hubris. Generally speaking, most people find it to be a negative quality - a social turnoff, if you will.

Hubris engenders schadenfreude. There's a natural cause and effect here...

I think, honestly, this is why so many people dislike her.

The idea that someone who didn't take the track/XC at a D1 powerhouse > USA Track > Marathoning route unsettles people. And it doesn't come with the usual data to make predictions, which is also unsettling to people.
