There's a huge difference between a male 2:20 marathoner and 2:30. A 2:20 guy is like a sub 30 10K and a 2:30 is like a 32 minute guy. So the 2:30 guy would be someone who can't be a starter in his given sport at the D1 level, and the 2:20 guy is a decent D1 level guy who has no shot at the pros.
Well right now a 2:20 marathoner is like top 15 in the USA for the year so I guess you're like a starting NFL quarterback?
Yeah, I’d say 2:30 guys are like the guys that play low level arena football or semi-pro baseball making a few hundred bucks here and there. Or maybe a local club golf pro that is competitive in state or regional tournaments. Definitely have some ability, but absolutely worlds away from anything that could be considered even remotely national class. That isn’t to belittle any of these accomplishments, it’s just that the world is a big place and there’s a lot of talented people out there in any endeavor.
Well, they would make less from their efforts than the average caddie.
2:20 = Journeyman player in AA baseball, third string/practice squad QB in NFL, starter in NBA G-League
2:30 = Prospect/Lower round draft pick in short season A ball, second string defensive lineman in Arena League football, starter in CBA (Chinese Basketball Association)

2:20: all-WNBA second team.
2:30: the last player on each of the WNBA teams.
2:30 is the gold standard of marathoning and truly is an elite level ...an equivalency comparison of playing on an MLB team.
Do the math.
Stop being a skinny running dork, lifting a leg to the 2:30 Marathon!!
2:20 - 2:30 'thon = Olympic Champion/best in the world in most other sports.
Distance running is just so insanely competitive compared with virtually every other sport out there.
I put in 2:30 for M20-29 and it says top 99%. A 2:44 is top 98% so I think a 2:30 is well inside the top 1%.
High school seniors that play basketball get drafted at a 3 in 10,000 rate (.03%). Sub-2:30 is elite in my opinion but you probably need to be a bit quicker to line up with this stat.

2:30 is not elite for women much less for men.

2:30 for women is like a 2:10 for men.
i was a 2:32 guy a long time ago(36 years ago). i think the comparisons here need to take into account when the level was achieved. back then that time placed me into the top 100 boston qualifiers and at that time boston was the running world. i definitely did not feel like just one of the pack. there were few kenyans and ethiopians running big marathons then. now my time would probably not put me in the top 2000 or lower. i would equate a 2:30 time now to a double A baseball player. It was not easy as many of us had full time jobs, much poorer equipment, less training and medical knowledge, almost no clubs ... Looking just at the western world, I would be more competitve now as times have gotten slower i think. I don't believe i could have run faster even with all the changes as my 10k time was never going to be good enough.

2:30 is typically top ten in any major race. So unless you want less than 10 women in the elite field you may want to expand that range a little.
Kipchoge = LeBron - Arguably GOAT
Galen Rupp = Curry - Engineered from a young age, Dominant in college, inexplicably competes with the big boys
About 300 other East Africans = Everyone else in the NBA
Jared Ward - D-League MVP
Sage Canaday - playing in Israel somewhere, tries out for NBA squad every year
2:30 marathoner - The three white guys cheering at the end of the bench on Duke
