Evidence from the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials qualifying period and the current qualifying period for 2020 has led me to believe that the men’s B standard of 2:19:00 in the marathon is not equal in difficulty to the women’s B standard of 2:45:00. What do you think the women’s equivalent marathon time is to a man running 2:19:00?
My hypothesis is that it’s closer to the 2:35:00-2:38:00 range. The easy comparison for the current standards is “How much slower is it than the world record?”. For the men it’s now 17:21, and for the women it’s 29:35. I don’t think that is necessarily the best comparison, but it’s the easiest one to make.
It would be fantastic to hear from a physiologist on their thoughts, some highly regarded coaches, and some men & women who compete at that level.
