We got a voice mail about this from a fan in Florida wondering if anything had been up on the site about it and wondering if we could find any articles on him.
Someone did make a post about his death last week, writing, "Roy Chernock has passed away at 90....HOF coach for sure, everywhere he coached. Oceanside HS, CW Post, William and Mary, Baruch College. I learned so much from him. Tough little guy and always willing to share what he knew. Rest in Peace Roy."
Chernock had quite a career. After great success at Oceanside HS, CW Post (where he coached Vin Lananna), William and Mary (he's in there HOF) and others, he retired in 1990 at age 62. Well he didn't stay retired long as he started coaching at the HS ranks and didn't retire again until 2016.
Here are some articles on his passing.

Chernock was a fixture of East Coast T&F. A great guy who always had an encouraging word for all competitors. Great enthusiasm and passion. I remember him from his time at CW Post and William and Mary. Sad to hear of his passing, but his life was brimming with contribution to this sport. RIP Roy.

I was a camper and then counselor at the Roy Chernock Cross Country Camp for five summers.
What a great guy. Kind, generous and respectful to all the kids, whether a star or novice.
He also put together quite a staff including the late Norbert Sander, MD, of Amory Fame, when he was just a local doctor and New York Marathon winner, and Gary Muhrcke, another past NY marathon winner, Hector Ortiz, Olympian for Puerto Rico and many time NCAA All American, Johnny Biedrczki, many time NCAA All American at CW Post, Nina Kusczik, winner of NY and Boston marathons, and a pioineer of women's long distance running, and that guy Vin Lanana, who was the counselor for the B group, the up and coming future stars who had not yet won a local championship. I guess Roy knew where Lin should be, even back in the mid 70's. Those were the best of times.
Miss you, Roy. -
When I was a high school kid I would see Coach Chernock at local meets . . . raising his voice more than once! But he sure could coach, and it seemed clear (at least from the outside) that his athletes realized how advantaged they were because of that. However poor some coaches might be today, in the late 1960s, there were so few coaches who knew anything. RC was one who did.

I got my mba at William & Mary in the late 80s. Roy allowed me to run with the team, gave me locker and laundry privileges and gave me a pen when I graduated. He appreciated hard work and enjoyed his job. Never knew he kept coaching after he left Williamsburg. RIP Roy!
