I remember Candaele. I think he went to Oregon out of HS, but eventually transferred to Cal Poly SLO and did pretty well there. Pretty amazing story in HS though---quite an overall athlete.

Our top runner happens to be the 2 time state xc individual champ in our league and also a star football player. He runs every morning at 5 am and has football practice every afternoon and then plays Friday night's and gets up to run Saturday morning meets. I think his PR 5K is a 15:50 something.
Wow, that's impressive. Are you a parent or coach of the running team? I'm surprised either coach is OK with this. This kid is clearly gifted, and since he's not being forced to pick, it's cool he's doing both. Do the rest of the kids on either team harbor resentment? as clearly he isn't making both practices regularly.
Both coaches know and he makes every practice for both and plays basketball and baseball and runs track. Lol. I'm a parent of one of the girls on the XC team. But ALL our boys play football and run except one. They just aren't all running as the top runner in the state. I think our 2nd runner last year ran like a 16:50ish PR. They won state as a team also. The football team isn't as successful and in small schools pretty much everyone plays multiple sports. I cant tell you how the 2nd runner is doing this year as we haven't had a real meet yet.
i was my high school quarterback and top 10 in state XC
better at T&F though
One guy did football, soccer, and XC all in the same season

The sport of football attracts many exceptional athletes, but to play the sport is dumb. Think about what the sport will potentially do to your body for the rest of your life.

Yeah we all did. Read the story of Jake Merrell . You won't find him playing football this year as he made the mistake of going to baylor. Just kidding Jake.
Ole miss has one of these guys too but I can't find his story. Ran a 3:44 as a freshman last year.
Heres an interview with the dude from ole miss after ncaas
https://youtu.be/7eIwnYxUJNYSo that means there is another one. I was talking about Cade Bethman. He did 4 sports must of his school years til he got to Arlington Martin. Then it was just x country and track.
I guess the moral of the story is if you want to run fast in college go to ole miss
Football is the natural state of the human body. Running is highly unnatural. You should quit runner altogether and focus on football- its just how humans are designed.
Have you seen the center-quarterback exchange?
I was the best distance runner in my school Jr and Sr year as a state finalist in both the 880 and mile but never ran XC because our league had a rule that you could only play one sport per season. I had grown up playing football and had started at safety my sophomore year, and went on to start both ways Jr and Sr year. Had a teammate a year older who started in football Jr year then turned out for XC senior year and took second in state. Another middle distance type. We both went on to run at top 20 D1 schools, although only track, not XC. I doubt this is all that rare.
I never did it (stereotypical scrawny runner here) but it wouldn't have been unheard of around where I went to high school. I'm guessing a small town/rural area?
I lettered 2 years in HS football and then went on to run on 2 national championship XC teams in college. My HS didn't allow multiple sports simultaneously.

In the '98, '99 and '00 Nick Setta was the field goal kicker for Lockport HS in Illinois, and also placed in the top 20 at the state meet all 3 years, once as high as 5th. (This was the same era as Jorge & Ed Torres and Don Sage, so it was as tough as ever, as Illinois always is.) Setta also won the state 800 in 1:52.24.
In college Nick Setta was the field goal kicker for Notre Dame, then had a long distinguished career as a kicker in the Canadian Football League.
I came on here to post the same thing. He even ran track at ND.
The ND football team (the strength and conditioning coach maybe?) tried their hardest to make track tough for him and his schedule from what I remember. Can't imagine trying to balance the training of football along with the specificity of the 800m. One sport definitely had to suffer. Kickers and punters are good at 100m/200m workouts because they need to possess extroardinary fast-twitch fibers.
I think Setta was a 400/800 type but then I remember he did well in XC in HS. That's quite the range.
I am a current junior who plays football and runs xc. I've played football my whole life and have ran track since freshman year. My 800 pr is159 and I have taken up distance running since then. I go to football practice after school from 2:30 to 4:30 and play receiver and go to xc practice 6 to 7. I've ran a couple meets and have a pr of 16:18.
Looks like our Athens park run meet and greet.
This kid could be the real deal. Looking forward to what he does in the 8ks and in college.
Did Bryan Berryhill do football and XC? I know he was a very talented football player.
