Last time you ran a successful (for you) marathon and hit your time goal, could you have done the following two workouts 4.5 months out from your goal race?
Run 20 miles at MP+60 seconds
Run 7 miles at MP in the middle of a 12 mile run during a high mileage week (i.e. not tapered)
1. Yes. MP+1, assuming your MP is in the 6:00-7:45 range, shouldn't be all that hard. Even for 20. But why would you want to run a 20 miler (at any pace) that far out, I don't really know.
2. Yes again. 7 at MP? This is easier than tempo pace. If I were training for a half, this would be about the longest tempo (though run at closer to HMP) I would do. 6 or 7 at HMP with a total of 10-12 is a hard workout, but so what?
Neither of these should be that difficult at any time, IMO, assuming you're in reasonable shape. But they have no relation to a marathon in 4.5 months, really, or at least not a lot to do with the training you should be doing in those 4.5 months.
Are you trying to determine which MP to train for?
