what was steve prefontaines V02 max?
what was steve prefontaines V02 max?
i believe that it was tested at 84.
In the book PRE (The story of america's greatest running legend) page 142.says "pre's score of 84-plus had only been bettered by two athletes in the world" , a score in the high 70's would place a runner among the world's elite. Low 80's had only been achieved at the time by a few Olympic cross country skiers and other endurance competitors. Didn't say who scored higher then Pre.
Anyone known what is the highest score and who?
And highest score for a runner?
I think Steve Spence scorced pretty high?
P.S Jeff Galloway was also there at the same time (jan.1975)
page 141 say's that his score was 82 and he took three walk breaks in order to get that score.
Aouita carried an 87. To compare, Falcon blew out an 84 as well.

Frank Shorter's was a lowly 71. Dude was a stud.
according to: http://www.lancearmstrong.com/faq.html lance has a vo2 max of 83.8, so in line with the others mentioned here.
Kyle Heffner (1980 Oly marathon team, 2:10:54.1 PR): 88.3; Tom Marino (SMU All-American, 28:34 road PR): 87.8
These were found using the same protocol used in the 1975 study with Pre, Tuttle, Shorter, et al (Shorter was detrained and nowhere near racing fitness in that study).
Highest ever? I think Morceli had a reported VO2max of 96.1, but that sounds outrageous and I'm not sure if it's true or what protocol was used. If the platform on the mill is raised to a steeper grade, the VO2max will be HIGHER because the muscles are subjected to a greater workload. So readings do vary from study to study, and Morceli's value (if accurate) was probably attained using a protocol which raised the platform to a steeper grade than that used in other protocols. Something (like 7:25.11) tells me that his VO2max would have been pretty high using ANY protocol!
...or so I have heard. Somewhere in the mid 90s. But it's been so long since I saw the story I can't remember the exact number. Sorry to be so vague.
The highest values of VO2MAX per kilogram of body weight are found in cross country skiers, where these levels are directly related to performance. On the other hand, the highest absolute V02max values are found in rowers, where weight is relatively unimportant. The importance of oxygen uptake per kilogram of body weight to final success in sports such as cycling, x-c skiing and others can be illustrated by looking at Miguel Indurain (5 time Tour de France winner and Olympic gold medallist). To become his team Banesto leader and a contender to win the Tour, he had to loose about five kilograms. This changed his VO2max per kilogram of body weight from good to exceptional and allowed him become more competitive in the mountain stages
The highest VO2 max value ever recorded, 93 ml/kg/min, was from a Scandinavian cross country skier**. Greg Lemond had at one point recorded an astonishing 92.
Grete Waitz had a VO2 max of 73 ml/kg/min. when she was running at her best, one of the highest recorded values for women and on par with the values for some elite men.
**I am about 95% sure that this is Bjorn Dahlie (the Norwegian XC ski ?God?).

It is true the highest ever was a cross country skier. It was Bjorn Dahlie (i think thats how you spell it) from Norway. I think it was 99 possibly even 101. I wouldn't say that having one in the low 80's places you in the world elite though. I have been tested at 81.2 yet i'm def. not world elite and suck at cross running.
Actually in Norwegian we have 29 letters in the Alphabet. here is the correct spelling :)
...hope it displays properly in an English based brower.
Bjørn Dæhlie

X-C skiers usually test higher than runners because they're using more muscle groups in their sport (therefore consuming more oxygen). "Climbers" (both runners and cyclists) will also test very high if the protocol used raises the platform to a steep grade (running) or increases the resistance dramatically (cycling). Matt Carpenter supposedly tested out at 91-something on a protocol which used a steep grade, but his ECONOMY was worse than many runners whose max was lower than his. He's obviously suited to mountain races more than to level-surface running.
