This is quite an issue.....talking bad about skid row is racist, but skid row is also racist....no one wins

The homeless problem has gotten a lot worse all over Southern California.

I haven't studied the issue and am only making a guess but lack of affordable housing is probably the main reason.

Followed by not enough mental health care and substance abuse care and medical expenses.

If someone has a bad medical problem, they cannot afford the bills and being off work they loss their job. A lot of folks are screwed if they have to take time off work for any medical care. They don't have savings and cannot find somewhere cheap to live and once they are homeless I would imagine it would be hard to get a job that would pay enough to get the downpayment to pay first and last month rent.

And then there are those with mental health and substance abuse problems.

I’ve actually driven through skid row quite a bit. The whole surrounding area is gentrifying but skid row is holding strong. Homelessness has definitely increased, I’m not sure if it’s due to lack of healthcare/mental health resources or lower job prospects. But something is going on.

Yet when loser Garcetti runs for POTUS in 2024, he will claim:

1. He resolved the teacher’s strike. He did not.

2. He got LA the Olympics. He did not.

3. He reduced crime. He did not (they simply reclassified crimes statistics)

4. He worked tirelessly to solve LA’s homeless crisis. He hasn’t done jacksheet.

Gentrification has moved many low income dwelling residents out of their apartments and on to the streets or out of downtown and into other areas of So Cal. The number of street dwelling residents is up in surrounding communities as well.

google maps allows you to see all historical street view images at a given point, so you can see what certain blocks looked like in 2008 vs. 2018. The area of hardcore "tent cities" appears to have almost doubled in ten years, which is really shocking.

Yes, I used to frequent downtown LA in years 1999-2001 and can say the said row and general area since that time is a lot smaller and less violent. Downtown LA as a whole is now affluent. If you think skid row is bad now, it was a lot bigger 18 years ago. People actually hang out in Downtown now and there are swanky restaurants and many loft living places. There was a time when it was one coffee shop and one loft that was on "the map". Homelessness is a big problem though, mainly due to a higher increase in mental illness and PTSD.

I did a few runs through skid row in the early mornings when I used to live in downtown LA. They have a whole cleaning crew that picks up the aftermath of the previous night. Lots of trash and debris strewn about everywhere like a tornado ripped through that section.

LOL . . . I have run through skid row in LA a couple of times. Try it, and get over your personal issues about those types of people.

One of the best posts I've ever seen on letsrun.

Affordable housing is impossible with CA regulations. Sacramento is a lot to blame.

But the magic wand (common in anti-Reagan 80's reporting about the homeless) of waving that only "housing" is necessary to solve the inherent problems is rather myopic too.

And most of the "compassionate solutions" will likely make the problem worse (i.e., shooting-up centers for junkies).

City of Los Angeles as the area east of Main Street, south of Third Street, west of Alameda Street, and north of Seventh Street. Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States.

I agree, some people just see filth, drugs, squalor.

Others of us see opportunity.

Here's my plan to clean up Skid Row:

1. Get homeless stop buying one-way tickets to LA

2. psychiatric wards make a comeback

3. more half-way houses

4. the drug dealers and rapists are lynched
