She failed an in-competition test for steroids. At USAs. A meet she had been tested at the year before.
She knew she would be tested and she must have believed she would pass. They were probably doping like it was 1990. Tests are more sensitive today.
USADA got lucky in the sense that this was a gift handed to them. They rarely catch athletes of this caliber via in-competition tests.

Her mother's cancer came after this positive test, it was leukemia not breast cancer, and as far as I can tell, it is not used for that purpose in the US anymore. It's a very old school drug.
