Is your new job with the phones totally different from your prior line of work; i.e. does it sounds like a big adjustment? Or was your prior job office-based too?

It's a similar job except I was partially commission based. I worked less hours and made more. My employer worked with my husband previously and knows I am a single parent so he let me pretty much work as much or as little as I wanted. Some weeks I get 20 hours, others 60. The flexibility that job gave me was the best part about it.
Today they closed all schools until May 4th and my senior just sat down and cried. I feel so bad for her. She's worked so hard. I know it's not JUST her. So many seniors have worked so hard.
Then she said... coaches that were looking at her before said they can red-shirt her her freshman year because they are unexpectedly getting to keep some seniors for another year. These are coaches that had previously stated she would likely make the team her first year. Albeit the tail end of the team.
I'm sorry to hear about the hardships COVID-19 has imposed on you. I'm not precisely familiar with "red-shirting" (not being from the USA), but I believe it means that she can forgo scoring for the team in her freshman year, then retains an extra year of eligibility? If so, is that what you were hoping for - and could she still run for and train with the team, provided her places are not counted for scoring?
Also, with schools being closed until May 4th - does this mean HS seniors must take alternative assessment to meet conditions of college entry, or is college entry already guaranteed (in which case, the schools closing is unfair and upsetting on a personal level, but not detrimental to college plans)?
Regarding the college situation - firstly, congratulations to your daughter. I know nothing of Notre Dame, but I am currently in the nascent stage of an epidemiological research path in the UK, and Hopkins as a great reputation in this area. Granted, it's a fairly niche field (although perhaps not for much longer, in the face of this pestilence...) - but if it has good epidemiologists, it probably has good biological, statistical, or biomedical departments, which likely speaks to the quality of the place. I should perhaps note, though, that with a few exceptions, most UK universities don't have truly dramatic differences in department quality - I don't know if this would apply to the US.
What does your daughter wish to study? Whatever it is, she should be very proud of what she's achieved. Best wishes to you all!
To be completely honest, "I" don't have a clear understanding of the rules regarding red-shirting. I'm unsure what is going to happen with high school. My daughter has enough credits to graduate without this last semester except English. Fortunately, she's taking that as a dual credit through the local college and that class was already online. It has not been affected. She will graduate as valedictorian.
I'm not sure what will happen with the other seniors who needed credits to graduate. Now you've got me wondering.
She's flip flopped a lot on her degree. It was journalism from a very young age. Then more recently it has been computer science (programming) and the last few weeks she's really been talking about accepting the Johns Hopkins scholarship and doing something in science research. I know she was joking but she said earlier maybe she should just get a job now and forego college because she didn't want to work that hard again just to have it taken away.
If she is interested in science research, then I strongly, strongly advise taking the JH scholarship. That would make her a very, very strong candidate for science programs upon graduation, if she still feels that way. Even if she DOESN'T, there's no way it will hold her back - it can only open doors, no profession will turn you down due to a STEM degree from Hopkins, especially not a fully-funded one.
I know she was joking, but I'd say the opposite - the economy could be cratered for a few years, so it makes more sense to go to college for four years and come out with a strong degree into a world that is hopefully by then on an economic upswing.
The good thing about going to a school like Hopkins is that she doesn't need to decide yet.
So I've decided to just start training for the marathon next year. Looking for a good plan to stick to.
The kiddo is leaning towards Johns Hopkins but their team is full.

I jog a lot but my kid and I made a bet so I need help winning. She bet me I couldn't run a sub 6:30 mile before she graduated HS. If I do then she's going to run her 1st year of college for me. If I lose I have to pay her car payments her first year. Fair warning, I'm old, overweight, and slow. I have 1 year 9 months to win.
I started a new diet 2 weeks ago and have lost 12 lbs. Current weight is 159.
I do about 20 miles a week at 9:30 to 10 min/mile pace. Is this doable? I don't mind paying her car payments but I don't really want to lose anyway.
Fastest mile this year was 8:25.
Need any other info?
This thread is looong. Is there a long story short version?
Did you win the bet?
Just to support what several others have written, that John Hopkins has a much stronger academic reputation than any of the other places mentioned; this can be helpful when it comes to job applications later on. But of course this is not the only factor in making a decision :-).

I wonder when this "team is full" thing started in D3. When I ran in college a long time ago, our team would take anyone that showed up.
Perhaps you should contact the admissions office and let them know that your daughter likely won't be coming because the team is full. Send her to Amherst; it's a great school.

Looking at the Hopkins roster online they have over 40 women just on XC alone. That's a lot to handle. don't think the admissions office will care as they have 30,000 applicants every year. Best bet is to have her meet with the coach to really show she wants to be on the team and train and race on her own (or with a club team) and hope a spot opens up. She then gets the best academic school regardless. Fyi try to encourage your younger daughter to email college coaches now

Is there about 1 month or 2 months left on this? What is the time trial deadline date?
Good luck.
I don't even want to talk about it. lol
Dangit. It was supposed to be May 29th. Then they cancelled graduation. Now they've moved it to June 5th. I'm not going to win this bet and I Do. Not. Like. Losing.
Has oldest daughter made a college decision?

Yes, she's running at Johns Hopkins. They ended up having someone choose another college and so she took the only open spot.
Registration for the Disney January Marathon is tomorrow. Of course Honey wants to run but I'm not sure if she'll be in the middle of an indoor season or if coaches would be okay with running a marathon between cross/outdoor. What's your take?

Eh. Different sport than running but former D1 athlete.
My coaches would be *MORE* than angry if I did something like this, but then again I was on scholarship in a revenue producing sport at a D1 school.
Reality is, at the college level there is no such thing as an off season. In my sport, we had four weeks of the year where we were not involved in some type of organized team activities. She will likely be coming off of indoor and progressing to outdoor focused work during this time. First week of Jan is usually the first week of spring term which means first week of outdoor practices.
Now from an athletes perspective - this new term is where new coaches come in and a new chance for first impressions. Does she really want to be coming off of a marathon and having to jump into pre-season practices? Pre season practices can be some of the hardest of the season.
Also, trying to fit the milage in for marathon training while keeping up the speed work required for indoor while balancing late season stress is a recipe for injury.

You only have yourself to blame. You and your ilk chose not to wear masks and properly social distance are the reason your daughter doesn't get a proper graduation.
Wear a fuckin mask
