They violated 163.5 (c) by stepping inside the cones at the start before they were supposed to.

Salpeter totally screwed up and kicked with 800 to go thinking she was on the last lap. She thought she had won when she crossed the line with 400 to go and basically came to a complete stop and started celebrating. She then realized she had screwed up and had another lap to go and cut right in front of McColgan which might've been why she DQ'd. Added some excitement to the race!

The official results say she was DQ'd for violating Rule 163.5(c). This rules provides that runners who cross the breaklines at the beginning of the race "shall be disqualified."

She has claimed in several interviews she would like to wear the burqa, but can't because it wouldn't be practical in T&F.
