Which is it? Once a week or not at all? That’s a huge difference.
it is never bad to run 40 miles a week and its never bad to run easy.

Most people only do one workout a week over the summer then two once the season starts
It seems like you do once a week though. If you're doing none at all, I wouldn't sweat it, just make sure you're doing strides. 10-16 weeks in season doing two hard efforts a week is enough to get in work. A lot of people think you need to start workouts early or you won't get in shape in time for the season, they usually burnout by championship season.
what do you mean maybe once a week? you should be keep track of your training and it sounds like you or your coach don't really care enough about it..

Run more, 40 mpw is low.
Do what makes you happy mate! Sometimes, we can get so paranoid about constantly doing workouts and nailing splits. While this is sometimes necessary, I feel like just going for a run and enjoying the outdoors is what we need to get back to. Whatever your heart desires, do it! Life is too short to do otherwise!
I think you could be doing 6-10 miles a week @ tempo. Just go easy tempos. If your 5k is like 17 mins, just go @ 6 minute pace.
I’m a rising sophomore, I ran 4:40 freshman year and did not do xc last year do I have a lot of questions lol
