Brett Larner ran the 2020 Tokyo marathon course exactly 2 years before the race - it was 88 degress (31 C) at the start!!

Are people really this ignorant? Refreshments of any sort taken from aid stations are allowed according to IAAF competition rules. There's nothing stopping anyone else from being creative with what they take and use. I have to laugh when I see elites throwing down their bottles in hot races instead of holding onto them and continuing to drink as needed. Then they complain about how hot it is and how Rupp had some sort of advantage.

Would the runners be allowed to put on / switch cooled singlets, or even vests built to retain the cold better, at each aid station, too? As long as they have a bib on each of the outer garments, I don't see why not when the cooled cap is allowed.

I am amazed by this thread. HOW CAN THE BLOWHO'S BE SO DENSE? Why is this a story today? Every expert knew exactly what the conditions were going to be in Tokyo since they were granted the Games. The fact that Brett needed to be on the course on the same date (2 years out) to prove to the uninformed just how brutal the conditions will be is alarming. Wake up and follow the sport.

I guess 88 degrees is to hot for snowflakes to melt. Tokyo gold will definately be on the cards for Bekele. Let the others worry about the heat because they don't have to worry about getting gold with Bekele in the race.

After reading your post several times it finally dawned on me that you were trying to say TOO hot.

To, too, and two all have different meanings. Throwing the improper one in the middle of a sentence makes it difficult to (not too or two) understand.

First: Why should I care what the weather is like 2 years before the race? I mean, just tell me the averages if you are concerned.

Second: They all are racing in the same conditions, so why does it matter? Some people race better on a super flat course. Some race better with some hills. Some race better with wind. Some race better in cold. In the end though they all race in the same condition. There is no set of circumstances that won't benefit some or hinder others.

Good thing Rupp is good in the heat.

I’m not sure why they always pick these super hot locations. I guess if your the best in the world you better run well in the heat.

Too expensive to run at night? How much money goes into bidding for and staging an Olympics? And running a marathon at night is too expensive? Really?

I live in Tokyo now. Yes, it's been very very hot this year, but I've been running in the mornings - when the 2020 marathon will be run - and yes it's hot, but if I can handle it as a beginner runner, out on roads running alongside cars and such, I suspect elite athletes on a closed, fully supported course can handle it.

Also worth noting that *last year* there were long stretches where the high for the day was never above 78F for days on end.

Atlanta, Beijing, Rio - all known for rather warm weather. Tokyo will be fine.

Are you doing a marathon at full effort on your morning runs? Have you ever done a marathon? That's a lot different than going for a jog as a beginning runner.

I find 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. the best time to run (after sunrise) in hot, humid places. Running in the evening gets you cooling temperature and importantly allows you to avoid the sun, but temperature does not cool very much and it is often still hot after ten at night. Plus, you run a good chance of thunderstorms in the evening where it is humid and the temps are going up to 90 or more during the day and dropping only to 80 at night (more like 5 in the morning). To put your statement more clearly, if it reads 90 in the shade, but the sun is overhead, it's going to be way over 100 degrees on the course, whereas if it reads 90 in the shade and the sun is going down, it is going to be a lot closer to 90 everywhere.

The morning, right before the sun comes up would be best. The sun heats up the air/ground/trees/buildings all day and they spend all night cooling off. Then the cycle repeats. I always thought this was common knowledge

So I guess everyone on Letsrun has forgotten that Tokyo held the World Championships in 1991 from Aug 23 to Sep 1. And it was hot. About 86 F with 80% humidity.

Women’s Marathon started at 7pm local time on Aug 25.

Winning time was 2:29:53 with bronze at 2:30:10

The men’s race was on Sep 1 at 6pm local time. Winning time was 2:14:57 with American Steve Spence getting the bronze in 2:15:36

With global warming, it will be at least 0.04 hotter in 2 years.
