Yes, this is true. There is nuance and caveats and qualifiers for everything, and those seem to be lost on many people these days. And I am not a big fan of Columbus Day. So I respect your points.

We can’t change history. There were and still are horrible things in our country. I just don’t think renaming everything makes sense. When are women’s rights groups going to come out and say we need to rename everything Kennedy, MLK, Clinton, etc because they were screwing around on their wives? Yes, I know that slavery is way way worse than having a mistress but where is the line drawn? Someone agreed w slavery, someone had slaves, someone fought for slavery? All are wrong.
By your line of reasoning Germany should still have all their Nazi monuments. Why tear those down? I mean if you start with the Nazi's........who is next???????
No where on this thread is anyone advocating with the renaming of everything. I happen to believe that humans in a democracy are complex enough to be able to actively negotiate the grey line of what historical monuments and place names are worth saving and which we would benefit from by getting rid of.
You are equating cheating in a marriage with the death and enslavement of millions. If you don't think humans can figure out how to distinguish between those two then why would you be ok with tearing down nazi symbols? because, my gosh........where would it stop?
"Someone agreed w slavery, someone had slaves, someone fought for slavery? All are wrong".....but all are not equal.
which ones do you the the alt-right white nationalists using for symbols and means of intimidation? those are probably the ones that we should consider getting rid of.

If it wasn't worth renaming things , then there would probably be a lot more Nazi era names in Germany. I agree it can, and usually does, go too far. That doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. In the end, no one is a saint, but that doesn't mean we have to respect the devils with monuments and schools. Place names are powerful form of politics and shouldn't be taken too lightly.
The same people complaining about changing the names of places are probably the same one who were chowing down on 'Freedom' fries not that long ago.

yeah i thought the backlash against Columbus Day was a bit much at first, I mean he was just a pawn of history. Then I read he was a sadistic pycho who would routinely slice of people noses as a form of punishment. So yeah, probably don't need too many statues of him around

Funny you should say that. Some years ago, King County in Washington State, originally named for Rufus King, changed its name to "Martin Luther King County" because the original Mr. King was a slave owner. I love how we're trying to whitewash everything. (Oops, I bet that's a racist term.)

Regan is on the list of street names to be change due to ties to racism... Which Regan is this?
John Reagan, postmaster of the CSA. The school district has already voted to rename Reagan High School that was named after him.
It might be time to also look at Yale, named after slave trader
Semenya would be the perfect name to honor instead of slavers like Washington
20th Maine

The Confederates never recovered.
Lee knew it was over, that was the end.

I can't believe just how sensitive everybody appears to be anymore. I couldn't care less who owned slaves way back when and I'm black.
What actually connerns me is where would my family have been if my ancestors had stayed in Nigeria. Where would I be?
To be kind, alleged slave trader
Democrats are “funny”
If slavery was reinstated and eligible Americans were allowed to keep one Canadian citizen as a house slave then just imagine how this would immediately solve the problem of Canadian homelessness.
M.A.G.A...
Sam Houston ran Texas after running out the Mexicans.
Houston was kind enough to name Austin as an associate....
Austin was an effete like the brojos...
Should he have owned slaves, it wasn’t apparent in my studies...
