A buddy of mine at work was saying he hopes to be worth $100k by forty. I figured this guy has to live the most boring life if he has been able to save that much in his 15 years of working. Am I crazy or is this a normal amount for most 40 y.o.?

i'm the laziest, fuk retirement, take 6 months off a year, live for today guy around and even I will have 100k by 40.
Only chance for lazy people like me to gain any networth is to bite the bullet and save up enough for a down payment on a cheap place to live and then resume the lazy nomad lifestyle.
find a cheap place that you like, and learn to live cheap, it's more fun than plowing funds into a mutual fund.
don't most people graduate at 22. if so, then you'd have 18 years to amass a net worth of 100,000. so save 5555 per year and you're there. that doesn't seem easily doable when you consider equity in a home/value of your other assets?
Depends on your definition of worth. If you're talking net worth, I hit $100k at 33. If you're talking cash and retirement savings, I hit $100k at 34. I worked lower wage entry level jobs and struggled to get the 1st $100k, but started to max out retirement accounts around that time so hoping to hit the next $100k much quicker.
don't sweat it though, I'm not planing on being worth much more than 100k when I 'retire'
don't really feel like just donating my life to pay for a cushy death bed.
when you're old and shItting in a bag, life will suck no matter what and your money will be worth less than 10% to you than what it's worth to you now.
live life, avoid debt, enjoy your money now while it can buy something worth it to you

How sad you people who value your worth by the amount of money in your savings account.
I was worth $100k around 26 and had $100k in savings and retirement at 28. That was 20 years ago so it would be much earlier today due to inflation.

congrats, you win the "I hope I never have beer with this douchbag" award.
it's amazing that you are smart enough to earn enough to save that amount so young, but so dumb you don't realize that your situation is atypical.
you'll probably be broke by the time you are retirement age....fools and money and all that
"Joking right? huh huh"
douche rating 11/10
27 ish , i recall thinking i should be doing better then 17% return . then markets crashed, got divorced and married a woman with a lot more money than me.

denying this would require further conversation with Alligator-shirt man. No thanks!
I was worth $100k at 25 and $1M at 32. It wasn’t difficult and most of my friends are ahead of me because they don’t have children yet.

the fact you were able to do that is impressive. The fact that your user name is "Easy easy" is less impressive, ..more "I jump on every thread that looks like it might be a boring financial guy dick measuring contest."
