What about Tennessee being a good place to live? I was thinking of moving there. Yesterday, I took the train from Balitmore to DC for the Congressional hearing on doping and talked to some tourists from Chattanooga. They told me I could get a 3 bedroom 2 bath house in Chatannooga for 80k. They said for 500k I could live like a KING.
Chattanoogan here. I love Chattanooga. It was rated top outdoor town a few times. plenty to do, again if you like outdoor stuff. I think the secret is out though.
There are a lot of people moving here. It is a fast growing city. In the last year property has skyrocketed. It is still relatively cheap. In 2012, you could get a house for that cheap. Now, in the the more hip parts of town a 3/2, 1500 sq ft. would cost 180-300k. If you went to the rural areas (20 min away) you could find a house for around 125k.
No income tax in TN is nice. sales tax is 9.25%. Generally, a pretty moderate political town. Bob Corker (US Senator) lives here and his politics reflect the 'reach across the isle' style.
Come here for a weekend and check it out. stay in the northshore or the southside.

There are some great places to live in Tennessee. Most of them are in and around Nashville though in my opinion.
I don't see any 3 bed 2 bath houses in Chattanooga for $80,000, but there is this for $85,000:

I'm sorry that the big bad Mexicans scare you, Johnny. My kindly old maid Rosalita will tuck you in and sing you a lullaby in Mixtec if you need her to. She'll even keep your night light on until you're fast asleep.
No thanks, but I'll take a breakfast burrito tomorrow morning since you're offering. Get to it, son.
W/ a mouth like that on you, no wonder you're scared of the eses. Even Rosalita the maid would smack fire out your azz for talking like that. I'd be too busy enjoying life to bother w/ you, however. Make your own dang burrito, snow bunny.

Just go get me a burrito, son. I want it now. What are you doing? I never know what you're doing back there.
They have agricultural research companies in Missouri and Nevada...
Happy to see no one has bashed NJ yet.

Ok, Joisey sux, from Passaic to Camden.
I'm troubled that there's no love for sweet little Rhode Island.
Kansas City and St. Louis are 2 of my favorite cities I've lived in, and I am planning on retiring in St. Louis in a few years. Big town amenities without all of the ignorant people. It beats the hell out Cincinnati and Clevland.

New Jersey is the Mississippi of the North

Cincinnati and Cleveland are pretty low bars.
Missouri sucks, it get's the humid summers of the Southeast and the winters of Iowa. Although, 2 weeks in the spring and fall are usually nice.

RI is actually a beautiful state with moderate weather for the NE, if you can get a job there, honestly not a bad place to be.

Chattanooga is a great place if you like outdoors stuff and don't mind being in a less suburban area. Very affordable, good weather just humid and hot summers. Also, no state income tax!

St. Louis is actually a nice city with lots to do there. I would consider living there, but the weather is just too extreme both in the summer and the winter. If I'm going for extreme weather, I'm going for hot summers and then moderate the rest of the year.
I would live in St. Louis over a ton of other places that people typically say are good places to live.
Enjoy!

If those are the only places you can afford in CA then I guess it's good you aren't a fan.
CT is actually pretty beautiful and nice if you are near the coast, specifically Mystic, New London, Groton area. Very similar to ME and RI in that its very open compared to the nearby cities of Boston and NYC. Only concern is cost of living which is comparable to DC so kinda high. honestly you can get the benefits of CT at a lower cost in other places, but still a pretty cool state in some areas.

Arkansas: the NW part of the state has tons of running and biking trails and has IMBA (international mountain bike association) silver and bronze level ride centers
West Virgina: good mountain biking and hiking and trail running. The mountains their are not huge, but are surprisingly pretty
Idaho: Boise is one of only 6 gold level IMBA ride centers in the world. And there are a number of other silver and bronze level centers throughout the state.
Sorry, since this is a running forum I want to hear about great places to run, not bike.
Being ranked as a good place for mountain biking does not mean its a great place to run.
I have been to, and lived in, many places that were ranked as good mtn bike towns. They were not necessarily good for running.
Many bike towns lack local running culture. No/few running races. No access to open tracks. Mtn bikers tend to be gearheads and are more into the experience of flow rides or adrenaline rush downhills as opposed to improving their fitness or competition/racing.
We sometimes complain about hobby joggers not following or being fans of the sport of running, but at least the hobby jogger masses participate in the same big road races that pro runners compete in. Not many mtn bikers race, and few of the mtn bike masses participate in competitive type events.
Moving along on a bike is so much easier than running, and the activities tend to attract different types of people.
Atlanta GA is a great place to live

Wait, are you trying to say that there are nice places and s#it places in any state? Get out of here!
