I meant he would have great success in both events at separate meets when he chose to. Example 800 past month, and the mile/1500 at Portland and Bowerman Mile earlier this year. Also perhaps permanently the 1500 in his late 20’s or 30’s.

absolutely correct in my estimation.
guys go up like morons instead of going down.
but why do the 1500 at all? when you have a 142 why not go for the 141, rather than experiment and risk doing a wheating, get injured, sick, bomb out the rest of the way.
why not get the 400 down a second?
if the training is going perfect and we're really strong, throw in a major 1500 .... under these guidelines, he'd probably win against nearly anybody.
but stick to your bread and butter until you're maxed out.
