For the junior high school kids out there, a 2:10 Marathon was a big deal (even for an Ethiopian) in the early 1980s. I wonder what the Ethiopian record was back then.

That might have been the Ethiopian record. Based on ARRS, it seems Balcha was the top ETH marathoner for 5+ years. Just a couple minutes off the world record.
Of course, Abebe Bikila had set a world record of 2:12 at the Tokyo Olympics - in 1964.
RIP- I miss those days, the Golden Age of Marathoning.
Kebede Balcha set Ethiopian marathon bests 2:11:11 at Montreal 13 Sep 1981 and later 2:10:03 at montreal again, 25 Sep 1983
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Rest in Peace Adrian Lehmann - 2:11 Swiss marathoner. Dies of heart attack.
