ScottInTexas,
Hey dude! No, the May Classic in Worthington is no more. It has been renamed the Worthington Classic and it is on the first Sunday in May, but honestly, I don't know if even it is around anymore. There are a tons of races in Central Ohio like you said so that you can basically race every weekend if you want. Worthington has the Gary Smith 5 miler in August.
I have been out of the racing loop for a few years now really - I did some very small 5Ks last summer though. This spring will be entry back into it a bit.
I do my long runs primarily in three places, but I need to find another place to run just for variety:
Sharon Woods Metro Park - there is a very nice paved 3.8 mile loop there - its a nice place to go when I want to do a "double loop" - at a comfortable pace I finish two loops in just about one hour, so it's a good one hour run. Lots of joggers and walkers and some bikers, but it never is too crowded. Every half mile is marked. Problem there is that it is very hilly in spots. I don't want to do evey long run there. Tons of deer there in the open areas, even though they had an "overpopulation deer removal" hunt two years ago.
Highbanks Metro Park - Highbanks is the oldest metro park in Central Ohio and has serious trees that provide serious shade in the summer time. Temperatures can be 15 degrees cooler running on the dirt paths there. Very great place to run. Hilly in spots too, so again, I don't want to do every long run there.
Thomas Worthington High School - The track is almost always open which is good. There is a group that meets there the first and third Sundays every month (except Columbus Marathon weekend) for little races - 400m, 800M, 1 mile, 100M, and then either a 2 mile, 4 mile, or 6 mile run - those runs go out on the the bike path and finish on the track. Mostly slow folks young and old. There was a 7th grade kid who ran the mile in 5:28 or something like that last summer on basically no training, so that was nice to see - hopefully he will train an bit and get interested. I did a few of those races last summer, but I probably won't with the marathon focus this year. I will head there though for the bike path. It's a decent path and not too hilly - goes along the Olentangy River.
Looking for some other places to run too.
