To me it seemed like she quickly realized she just didn’t want to be there. It happens to many. I followed Mary from her early days at Bronxville and am a big fan.
I don't see running as such a mental thing. She physically was not ready to run well. Being happy to be there would not have made her legs move any faster.
It's difficult to speculate what's going on. For someone who ran like she did in high school it does not even seem like the same runner anymore. People compare her to what she did as a teen, but at the time I would have expected her to run 3:55, or so, by now.
