I think athletes outside of track tend to have their speed over estimated. The ideal running fitness for a soccer player is more that of a 4/8 type than a pure 100m type.
A lot of people point to football players that ran 10.low in highschool/college but forget that these guys now weigh 30-40 lbs more than when they ran those marks.
If a non track athlete was world record fast, I’d think they’d at least take a stab at the world record. In reality I don’t think most pro athletes get faster than 10.5 or there about. That’s still very impressive though.
There are few sports where you need to run 50m all out. Most sport speed is more about quick cuts and accelerating really quick. There are a few legit sprinters who played in the NFL and in general they were a step quicker but lacked the other skills. And most of them slowed down a half step when they spent a couple years getting into football shape.
But yeah 10.5 especially for guys who don't have great starts is pretty quick. Note how many of them talk about running fast 40s after prepping for the combine. They speed they play football was the preworkout time.
And it should be pointed out this speed overrating happens everywhere. If the top guy is a 10.5 instead of 10, he is still blowing by that guy who runs 11.5.....
