What about playoff hockey? The games go into overtime until a goal is scored.

I love the drama of the World Cup but what a joke PKs are.
I've been saying this for years and I'll say it again.
World Cup games - particularly the final - should not be decided by PK. End of story.
Soccer has modernized with VAR. The need to modernize with the end of the game as well. I don't want to hear that it's dangerous to let them to continue to play. Guess what? Someone would score. If you want to make it a little easier, make the goal 1 foot bigger ever 10 minutes in overtime. It's 2018. I think designing an expanding goal is something Elon Musk could handle in about 5 minutes.
do they decide on a kick off before regulation ends? Why would you suggest a coin toss before a race has ended? Bigger goals is a good answer, but make the goal sizes bigger period. more goals in the games, and more goals means less likely there is a tie.

1. Playoff hockey is best of seven. If you win a quadruple overtime game, it doesn't hurt the next series as much as it would hurt the next single elimination game in soccer.
2. Hockey has unlimited subs. Soccer doesn't. It would be interesting if after 120 minutes you could put players back in. The strategy would change a bit, not sure if it would be for the better.
3. Hockey players are tougher. It amazes me that hockey doesn't have flopping, because if you flop your way to an extra power play per game you'd have a huge advantage.

Found the guy that failed statistics.
At least I hope. It would be bad news for our education system if this guy passed stats.

Doesn't have to say the same thing for hockey b/c hockey (NHL) has evolved. In all NHL playoffs, overtime periods are played like regulation periods except for the golden goal rule. Teams are at full strength, there is no shootout, and each overtime period is 20 minutes with full intermissions between overtime periods.
Not quite - hockey does play full strength sudden death OT in the playoffs, but the intermission is truncated, AND tv timeouts are limited to one per period to sweep the ice.
Sure they have unlimited subs, but instead of barely jogging between plays, the players sprint around for 45 seconds then recover. Playoff hockey is very impressive to me.

you say all this, but soccer is still 100 times more entertaining than watching track

I'm a track fan, but I gotta give you props for this post...
They should have an overtime period in which you can pick the ball up and run with it.

Canadians are also good natured enough to accept a tie:
