SLC is a great program but would be 3rd in Texas in terms of # of sub 9 guys. The Woodlands and Kingwood High School each have more. A lot more state titles too.

Is there a coach Gilley or someone else who has 4 plus sub 9 guys during her time at Southlake , Texas?
Almost, 3 with a 4th at 9:00 for SLC
3200 meters – Boys
1. 8:44.01: Colby Lowe – 2008*
2. 8:50.43: Reed Brown - 2016
3. 8:56.07: Trevor Gilley - 2013
4. 9:00.42: Joe Sansone – 2013
5. 9:06.21: Charlie Gardner- 2017
6. 9:06.28: Nicholas Fernandes- 2017 7. 9:09.32: Neal Smith - 2010
8. 9:10.67: Connor Hendrickson- 2013 9. 9:14.61: CJ Brown - 2009
The Woodlands only has three. Eric Henry, Brian Sullivan, Reed Connor. Tons of state championships, yes, but it's pretty hard to run sub-9 in 100 degree heat in May, or in mid-day races with 25 mph winds.
What is your idea of “doing something”? Many of these guys went on to be all Americans in college and some qualified for the Olympic trials. Not too shabby. Breaking 9 in the 3200 or two mile is not a guarantee that an individual will become a world class runner.
Catton’s guys have gone on to be, a pro, an all American, top Acc runner and an Olympic trials qualifier. They all got better, you can help them get fast now, while getting them ready to improve later.
I count 6 for Guy Avery which would tie with Walt Lange on this thread. I maybe off my count since he isn't always with a high school and I don't know everyone who he has worked with.
(milesplit is my source so info prior to about 2005 is spotty)

They've had many others come pretty close.
Danny Green (9:01.3)
Chris Emme (9:00.97)
Daniel Gerber (9:03.22)
Alex Neff (9:03.33)
Noah Wells (9:00.40)
Jeff Moss (8:20 for 3000m)--- Or, maybe he did possibly run 8:56.87??? I don't know.

Actually, no actual record of Moss running the 8:56, but he did get 3rd at Golden West in 8:20.1 for 3000
To add to the low 9:0X group, Stacy Sutter ran 9:02.1 converting to 9:05.3 for the 2 mile
3200 meters 12 Colin Sahlman 8:33 2022 11 Lex Young 8:35 2022 11 Leo Young 8:39 2022 11 Nico Young 8:40 2019 11 Aaron Sahlman 8:48 2022 12 Daniel Appleford 8:52 2022 12 Aaron Cantu 8:57 2023 12 Nick Goldstein 9:00 2021 10 Dev Doshi 9:02 2022 11 Jace Aschbrenner 9:05 2019 11 Hector Martinez 9:10 2022 All of those times were run when Sean Brosnan was the coach, except for Cantu’s 8:57
Aschbrenner ran 8:44, paced by Nico, so that's 8 sub-9 in a span of five seasons, including three sub-8:40 and five sub-8:50, unparalleled. Too bad Nico's senior season was limited by the pandemic in 2020.
Newton only had 3: Sage, Bakken and Craker. If you go to 9.02 it comes 6.
I wonder if they would have had more if dragonfly’s existed back then
Maybe. But if you go down that path we will be debating BFs 5s versus 15s forever.
In a lot of ways the sign of a good HS coach is more a bunch of sub 9:30 type guys. Sub 9 even with the new shoes requires a decent amount of talent. Call it like 1:1k type talent. Back it off to 9:30 and it is more like 1:100. It is the level every school should have a couple every year if you can get kids out and get kids to train. But it is hard to get all your talent out and even harder to get them to do 60mpw for 2 years to turn them from 4:40/10:10 guys at average programs to 4:30/9:30 guys at good programs..
Gosh I was wondering what someone was gonna post his name. It's not like this happened 30 years ago.
Other than Youngs and Sahlmans, he has had one.
Aschbrenner + Appleford = 1 + 1 = 2
Spare me the Nico paced Aschbrenner to an 8:44. It happened. And others were close. Some of you are to focused on hating Brosnan rather than looking at what happened. Deal with it.
