That's what happens when you are outdoors training for multiple hours a day. Look at Lance Armstrong's face. He is 31 and looks about 45. Face or figure...can't have both.

And that Joshua Small from the USA is really not Small and not from the USA. Although he does live close to you OldGuy.
Drug test her...
Does he live in the Springs? Is he one of the various Brits who have invaded our village recently? (By the way, Gary Staines was planning to run L.A., but I didn't see him in any results, splits, or entries. Any idea what happened to him?)
I didn't realize that Jonesy was running (or even jogging) L.A. I had the impression that he was very content in his role as an ex-runner.
She split 1:16/1:13!
You win the prize. Gary was the "USA" runner that beat her. The chips were all messed up. (Gary had Joshua's chip, I guess). Steve Jones was there but hadn't intented to run, but ran as a tribute to Chris Brasher. (Typical Jones class)
She runs 1:16-1:17 for her typical half marathon, runs
28's for 5 miles yet ran 2:29 off of 1:16->1:13 splits.
She's either a freak of nature or on something they're not detecting and I tend to go with the latter. I run a 35
10K and I'm nowheres near 2:29; 2:49 maybe - on a good day. Somethings fishy boys....and her names Tatyana.

So Gary Staines had Josh Small's chip...whose chip did Josh Small have? he finished in 2:30:02 and nobody is listed in the results with that time. Looks like he didn't have a chip at all!
Sounds like quite a SNAFU!
Jones ran easy on Sunday...he signed up the day prior...
Mike
He signed up in tribute for Brasher. If you think he ran easy, look at his splits. It's pure guts. Like his whole career. If you don't get that, you don't get Jonsey...or his whole career.
If you go back a few years ago, she also won or placed in the top three in just about every major marathon and road race for several years. She was running about 10 marathons a year and at least a 10 on the weekends she wasn't marathoning. Her performances never fell off and she never seemed fatiqued.
I've always thought she was on EPO or something else that is not tested for in road racing. Not just her but the other Russian women also. I know they are talented, but not even Tegla Loroupe in all her glory could run as many races as this woman - and run them without a flicker of fatique.
This is of course is just my opinion - I haven't personally drug tested any of the Russians.
Apparently neither has anybody else! Send her to Ireland for a month or so.
I agree with 16x. It isn't so much her times that puzzle me (who says it's impossible for a 47 year old to run 2:29 if she has a perfect day?) but the fact that she races a lot and seems to recover from marathons remarkably fast. Racing a 10K every other weekend is one thing but racing a marathon (or even half-marathon) every month is something else. My friends (male and female) who have raced marathons say that it takes them about 4 weeks to simply recover let alone start preparing for the next one! I suppose some people like Doug Kurtis (sp?) just have the right physical tools to race frequently but almost to a person the grand-master's women that I've spoken with say that at age 44 or 45 they got noticeably slower and needed significantly more time to recover between races and workouts.

I didn't mean to imply that Jones was jogging...instead I simply meant that he did not train to run LA. I ran with Jones on Friday and Saturday last week in LA prior to the expo. Funny thing about Jones...on Saturday AM we ran 4 laps (about 11 minutes each)around the expo center/sports arena. Jones is the first to admit he is not fit, but that did not stop him from pushing the final loop (20lbs over his weight a year ago)...I'm guessing he will be back in shape soon.
Mike
Yeah, this is nuts. I will re-phrase what someone else wrote earlier: either she is one of the greatest women runners of all time with a range as good as Geb's (1:57 800 20 years ago! Now, a sub 2:30 marathon as she is heading towards fifty?!?!) and/or she is on serious drugs. And she grew up in the era of big-time drug-using Soviet women athletes. So it would not surprise if she has ridden that wave of talent and pharmaceuticals just right all these years. Suspended once? She smells dirty to me (and I don?t mean from running in the heat of LA).
(and let's pray DunesRunner does not see this or we will be subjected to a barrage of "Paula is a cheat and the Russians are clean!!!" posts )
It was her birthday yesterday 3/3/55 .She is 48 now.
who said he wasn't from the US. where'd you get this from
2:22 not 2:30
Look at the revised results. Noone from the USA beat the women's winner.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
