"Gender norms"? This has nothing to do with gender norms, and everything to do with the fact [Semenya's] testosterone levels are that of a male's, has internal testicles and no uterus... is not a woman. is an intersex athlete competing against females which is the real issue here.

I popped into my neighbours to watch the meeting and they have two daughters aged 7 and 8. During Semenya’s race they were totally confused and kept asking me, who was supposed to know something about athletics, why a man was allowed to run in a women’s race?
I couldn’t give a rational explanation either.
Every non runner I've shown one of these 800m races to has stated, "why are those men in there?"
Answer: They shouldn't be there.

I don’t understand why the women who compete in the same race just can’t make a stand. Literally, when the gun goes off just stand there and not race. That would send reverberations around the world and quickly put an end to this farce.
That would be great to see, but the political numbskulls who want men to compete in women's events would have them ostracized and try to remove them, while doing nothing to keep out the men.

A 1:54 is no big deal for a young adult male which is what we're talking about here.
A 1:54 is actually pretty good for a young adult. However Caster Semenya was born on 7th January 1991, so I don't think young adult is what we're talking about here. Peak performance would probably have been a year or two ago.

Because he is a man, and has no need to even pretend anymore.
Yes, when children ask why can't we bomb more places it really pisses me off.
Quite a gallery.

Likewise, I get no enjoyment out of watching these 800 races anymore. What a farce. The fact that it has gone on for years without them changing the rules is a joke. I don’t know how anyone can celebrate the performance when high school boys run 1:54 all the time. The other women in these races are making a huge mistake by not boycotting them until they get to race fairly again.
Exactly what I was thinking after seeing the disgust on the faces of the actual female competitors. I remember watching Mike McGrath run 1:47:xx as a senior in high school. 1:54 is simply not very impressive by a male, regardless of gender ID. The womens 800 has become more sideshow than race.

Totally sensible to have a conversation about whether Semenya should or shouldn't be allowed to compete in the women's category in this sport.
However it's entirely unnecessary, childish and petty to insist on referring to her as a 'him'. Not sure what kind of superiority complex one must have to go around deciding the genders of other humans. This has nothing to do with sport.
Would you prefer "it's"? Her gender might be female but her sex is male, at least as much male as female. If Semenya wants to be considered a woman, she has every right to be called "her". But it isnt right for her to compete.
Whatever you call her, she's wrong to compete. And to the water-muddying troll saying Semenya's genetic advantages are no different than Ryun's or whoever's to their respective fields: 0/10. Clearly different.

+1 Exactly, and this is the reason she should not be allowed to compete against women.
She? No
As Caster approached the 200m mark, announcer on NBCSN called Semanya a “he”.

That's an offense that should get the announcer fired. Somebody should send in a copy to NBC's management team.
This fiasco is joke on everybody but the XY runners who have no chance against Semanya and friends......

Semenya runs 1:54.26 with NO PACERS and looks very comfortable. She is cheating. How is this not cheating? She clearly has the musculature of a man. She knows her time is running out and is finally trying harder in races. She is a cheater!!!!
I agree with what you say although she is not cheating as such; rather the rules allow her to 'cheat' by being allowed to compete with abnormally high levels of testosterone. The sooner the new regulation comes into place the better for all other female athletes. I'm afraid her attitude and the whole, 'no sweat, it's so easy for me to win' antics at the end of her races, does nothing to warrant any sympathy for her predicament.

It's an offense on my brain to refer to XX runners's as XY, carry on.....

This charade has been prolonged due to the fact that (a) Semenya is black and (b) whatever it is runs for a third world country and in both cases, authorities walk on egg shells, terrified of upsetting either.
Ironically, as a Second Mate, when trading in and out of African ports, we used to come across a few, what we were told, were hermaphrodites and they were treated with hostility by the locals. We’d find them in bars, reduced to working in the sex trade. But with Semenya it’s different, because he/she could obviously win gold medals for South Africa and the they are not going to give up that unexpected windfall in a hurry. .

That's an obvious call that should have the announcer promoted.
We should all suggest this to NBC's management team.
The Semenya situation represents history repeating itself: as a group, women get screwed.
Obviously what Semenya chooses to wear and who she chooses to marry has little to do with which gender she identifies with.
Is Britney Reese clearly 'identifying as a man'?
