One of the more interesting things at this meet is Rai Benjamin ducking a possible matchup vs Abderrahman Samba and Karsten Warholm in the 400m hurdles.
It’s pretty common for athletes to focus on an off distance after a big breakthrough. Why do you think we didn’t see Wayde Van Niekerk try and break his record last year or Bolt seriously chase sub 19 until it was too late. I’m sure Benjamin and his group know the record is his to take and are hoping to set him up for something even bigger. Imagine if he’d lost to Samba today, 46.5 wouldn’t even be a thought, he might’ve ended up running 47.3 or something today. It’s about making sure you don’t get to settled in your own shortcomings.
Samba has a better chance at the WR in my opinion.
The 200m at this point in the season is a total waste of time. WVN was not in shape to break his WR last year. Bolt didn't try for sub 19 because he faced injury problems and focused on running his best at the big competitions.
If Benjamin backs himself on the world stage against the best he should have run in the 400h today.
