Like the subject says, who would you put on have a Mt. Rushmore of current American distance runners. No Glen Cunningham, no Jim Ryan, no Alan Webb, not even Ryan Hall. My picks:
Matt Centrowitz,
Shalene Flanagan,
Galen Rupp,
Jim Walmsley.
My picks right now are Galen Rupp, Jenny Simpson, Evan Jager, and Molly Huddle.
Rupp and Simpson were slam dunks for me.
I struggled not putting Shalane Flanagan or Matthew Centrowitz on there, but when you think about dominating the American distance scene as well as global success, I feel better about my chosen four.
For instance, Centro has his Olympic gold, which Jager doesn't have. But Jager is arguably better at his event in comparison to the rest of the world than Centro is. Plus, Centro hasn't won seven straight US titles.
Shalane versus Huddle was tough for me. Both have been equally successful on the world stage and Molly doesn't have a major marathon win. But Shalane never dominated US 5000/10000 quite the way that Molly has. I could go either way, but I went with Huddle in the end due to the world "current"; Molly would roll Shalane in most events right now.
