Yes. He's waaaaay up there. Juantorena was faster at 400 with inferior training, and about as fast at 800. And Juanto ran his 400 at sea-level.
Korir is benefitting from altitude and no doubt PED use while away from the prying eyes of honest officials. As for the "coach" saying Korir should be running 1:39, one hopes he's trolling. The 800 is an odd event, with 44 guys being outperformed over 2 laps by 47 sec runners. Cruz was a far better 800 man than Emmanuel will ever be (without drugs) and he could never get anywhere near 46 flat, never mind a 44 in an open 400.
I am curious to your words that Juantorena has "inferior training". Perhaps you do not know Alberto's programme? Also, I think
You do not know clearly Korir's to compare. You compare air to air I think.
On what planet does 44.21 s@ck?
Oh yeah, planet troll
Korir has plenty of speed to be world record holder over 800m
Can't wait to see what he does in Monaco.

Uhhh, you losers have been saying that for what, two years already. WR Korir imminent, Korir WR around the corner. Yeah ok. He is still like a second slower than the current king of the 800- Bosse.
Imagine what he could run if he did 100 miles a week!
Side note - he should be able to run low 1:12 (WR) for 600 at the moment (46 high + 25 mid) .

Similar to Juantorena
No similar would be running world records and winning Olympic golds. The horse was also built a bit differently so you'd expect the drop off.
I'd just be more impressed with this Kenyan running 1:42 than dropping his 400m time.. unless he's thinking of switching to 400m
Juantorena: 44.2 & 1:43.4, very similar just not in build.

And world records and Olympic titles as I said. Times move on he would be running faster over 800m.
He should work on his 800m time not 400m
Not a sprinter but I do know about altitude helping with the thinner air and such. But wouldn't the 400 be a bit long for that factor, at least it seems like you need some endurance for the 400, seems like the thin air wouldnt make that big of a difference.

You have great advice. He probably didn't think about doing that.

Dumbest post of the day.
Korir seems to be a natural 400m runner and I think his coach has figured to give him a chance to see how fast he can get(full potential). This year being an off year, his coach has decided to allow him to wander into the shorter event. He will be running the African Championships setting him up with Makwala and the Qatari. He will still run Monaco but he will be there to win not for the WR. The WR will have to wait for next year or 2020. By that time Korir will have shifted his focus fully on the 800m.

Add "crap 800 runner" to the quote and I would agree. You can't call someone who runs 1:43.1 a crap 800 runner no matter how good his sprinting is.
He's in his early 20s, so I'm guessing that he'll be even less crappy than 1:43.1 many times over the next few years.

I get your point, but Cruz has a listed pb (albeit from training) of 46.0. I would be very surprised if a sub 1:42 man couldn’t run at least 46 flat for 400m if need be, at peak form.
Both Coe (45.5 relay best) and Kipketer (45.4 relay best), were also at least 46 flat capable.
But your right, a 44 flat man is not necessarily a better two lap runner than a 46 or 47 400 guy.
Correct, and the ukathleticscoach is absolutely correct that Korir should work on his 800 time not his 400 time.
44.2 at altitude will win you nothing. With 1:43.1 you can win World's, Olympics etc.
WVN fit would be threatening 42s at 2400m of altitude. Diamond leagues are routinely won in 43s these days at sea level. World champs and Olympics you need to run 43 to medal.
Korir should absolutely be working on improving his 800m, including racing it to improve his tactics, he has plenty of speed as it is.
You do know how to beat Korir? Slow down the pace, he has no change of pace, especially after a few rounds.

Once of these World Championships/Summer Olympics, Kenyans are going to have a meeting. Agenda: Let's earn an Olympic &/or W.C. medal, 4 x 400m. One or more elite 800m man will have to sacrifice to be on 4x400m relay. 4x400m relay heat may interfere with 800m heat(s). E. Korir may request or be asked to race on Kenya's 4x400m relay.
Why are a lot of people out here saying altitude helps sprints and therefore Korir's great run does not amount to much? That is what they said when Korir ran 1:43 for 800m and also that 44"53 for 400m in Texas. The right person to ask is Wayde Van N. , Isaac Makwala and other 400m specialists. How fast have they run at altitude? Do you want to tell me that those who finished a second behind Korir at the Kenyan champs would beat Korir when they go to sea level? Saying that because even the Kenyan record holder (Samson Kitur - 44"18) hardly broke 45" at altitude yet was bronze medalist at the 1992 Olympics.
Korir is a special talent and looks to be leaning towards the 400m more than the 800m. I dare his coach put him in at least two diamond league meets this year and Korir will run 43 seconds!
For all those people thinking better 400 m would make you a better 800 m runner, automatically; by extending this approach you could say Usain Bolt should be the first man to break 2 hours in the marathon.
It is not that easy...
No this is only one event up. It's like speculating what Bolt can do in a 400 based on his 200.
