The naysayers don't take that into account- these are pro athletes. They only have so many races in them. Wy compete for free when there is nothing at stake?
If your shoe sponsor doesn't make it worth your while it makes no sense.

Why did she not simply go to US junior in order to qualify for world junior?

She would have no competition at World Juniors, she might not have any competition period, sub 52 in the 400 hurdles and sub 49 in the open 400 are realistic for her This Year, she is a rare talent.

I wish all our best were going for a National title here, but the fact is that so far most of the top people haven't been competing.
Look at the men's 10000m for a good example. Lopez Lomong, whose title days seemed behind him, beat a couple of good runners but many of our top guys weren't there.
Lopez beat the 3rd fastest American of all time last night .. the 1st fastest is running marathons and the 2nd fastest is retired. What more could Lomong do to earn respect for the win?
Syd has the chance to sign her shoe/apparel contract for big bucks. And if she wants, pick up some late summer meets in Europe. She has always been smart about things. Good for her. Go Syd Go!
She travelled there and warmed up. She had every intention to compete. 95% of the healthy Americans are competing.
this-why race in a non-championship year and risk injury-go to Europe instead for more $$

Must be nice to have the choice to not run but I wonder if she'd toe the line if she was living paycheck to paycheck.
Obviously. The people at the USA champs are the ones making pennies. Maybe getting 30k a year at most. All the stars are at home relaxing. Getting ready to go overseas and make money.

We don't have "many" guys better at 10000m than Lopez and Shadrack.

I want to see the stars perform.
However from a $$$ perspective I can't blame her. I've heard talk of her getting 7 figures a YEAR.
Yet I think there's a chance Kendall Ellis beats her here in the 400. (And Irby beat Ellis at USAs) So don't do anything to diminish your brand until its signed and dotted.
Its a chess game planned by her agent for her pro debut.
They want maximize her European appearance fees as it was not planned by meet directors.
It is not a seven figure deal. Mid six figures were being talked about at NCAA's as agents pitched her parents who would represent her.
She will have to race more than just 400h to get her real value. Flat 400 and maybe the 200.

Not a good way to start your pro career...obviously I am not buying the tightness in her quad story. It takes years of accomplishments to build a strong fan base, but only a few stunts like this before people turn against you.
Stop the madness. No one is racing that much this year. It's an off year, and athletes are treating it as such.
USAs are not important this year.
So much for "off-year fast."
These careers will be over before they know it, and all anyone will remember is how little anyone actually took part.

Can you tell us some details-how many years, guaranteed amount, incentive structure, givebacks?
An agent for a T&F pro, I assume protects their athletes as does a boxing or MMA fight promoter. I disagree with your theory regarding 200/400 unless 200 or 400 races are set up with Clydesdales. Winning streaks are what star T&F, boxers and MMA fighters need for promotion. Remember how Coe suffered from Ovett/Cram avoidance syndrome?
Sydney and her coach make the decisions on what meets she runs in. She has had a super frosh year in college. Maybe now is a time for rest. I have seen athletes perform extremely well in the NCAA Championships and a few weeks later look like different runners. It's a long season and people react differently. We will have the pleasure of watching Sydney perform in the future when it counts. None of us are in the position to demand her to entertain us although I certainly enjoy watching her compete. Be patient! In the future she will amaze us!
