I would have kept the money.
I'm only human.
On a long run, my buddy and I found a wallet with two twenties in it. It was on a college campus and had the guy's ID and everything. We turned it into a dorm security guard with the cash. I know the security guard kept the cash.

No one should carry more cash than they could lose without being mildly irritated.
Getting my ID, bank/credit cards, CHL, etc. all returned without having to replace them would be very worth the minor price in cash taken.
Maybe I’ll put a note in my wallet to this effect from now on.

I'm a security guard. About three weeks ago a school administrator gave me a wallet - the only one I recall ever receiving as a guard - which I believe he got from a student who found it on a sidewalk in front of the school. I returned it to its owner with everything intact as far as I know, including cash. Perhaps someone lifted some of the money before I received it, but the owner seemed to think nothing was missing. Chalk one up for humanity.
Are you kidding? Of course, return the money. If you were on the verge of starvation, do what you have to do, but short of that, even considering doing anything else is out of the question.

Nice! Cheers, bro! I like you.
But I was one step away from the welfare office when I found 100 ish dollars 25 years ago. No regrets as I have given away thousands since......
A Public Service Announcement: If you lose your wallet or purse and it is returned completely intact, change your credit card numbers anyway. There have been cases where the "honest" person returns everything, including cash, but have recorded all card numbers plus the security code on the back. The wallet or purse owner is happy until several weeks later when they see all sorts of charges on their card.
Years ago I found a wallet with about 25 bucks in it along with a small bag of weed. My roommate called the owner to let him know we had found his wallet. We gave him the wallet back minus the cash but with the weed still in it. The owner didn't even ask about the cash when he got his wallet back. I guess he was just glad we didn't turn him in or smoke his weed.

or very likely he forgot he had $25 in there.
I know a guy who said someone found his wallet and called him up and said they would return it in exhcange for about $60 reward fee. The guy told me he ended up haggling with him forever in order to settle on an amount and get his wallet back. He said he ended up paying about the full amount. There wasn't any mention of cash in the wallet but i'm sure that would have been figured into the amount.

Physically you're human. Mentally, emotionally and socially you are not.
I found a wallet in the library last year. Had like 200 bucks in it. Being a good person, I turned it into the clerk who didn't even give me so much as a 'thank you.' I wish I had kept the money.

If I found a wallet and needed to mail it back like the op did, I would have used the money in the wallet to pay the shipping but put the change back in it.

Years ago as a young lad I dropped my wallet while crossing the street right in front of my house. I was heading out with some friends, as we got into the car, at that moment I heard a car stop in the street where I had crossed and I looked up to see a guy getting back in the car and quickly take off. It looked odd and I wondered what it was about until seconds later I realized my wallet was missing.
3 or 4 days later it shows up in the mail with no cash but the credit cards and ID were there. Just like you are talking about, but you no what? None of that crap matters because it all has to be cancelled/replaced long before that anyway.
You and Lenny are just two more dirtbag sh*theads among many.
Found a wallet once with 7 bucks in it. Mailed it back to the owner, but kept the 7 for envelope, postage, and time spent. Seemed fair to me at the time.
